Anyone been to Spray Lakes yet?
If you have, how thick was the ice at the boat launch?

My dad and uncle were considering fishing Spray on Tuesday. I'll tell them to wait a while by the sounds of it.

Went this aft, fished well. 5-6” from the driftwood launch all the way out.

That I find very interesting that it could grow to 6" all across in a matter of 10 days when the temp continues on the way above normal scale. But it is a very high elevation so anything is possible.

How is it that Spray was not already frozen when everything else has been frozen for weeks? I know guys have been fishing Kananaskis already so must be something specific to Spray?

Driftwood is frozen, or at least frozen enough to walk a few feet out onto the ice. Saw a few groups out there fishing near to the shore. Rest of the lake down towards Sparrowhawk is still mostly open. Ice is patchy. Shallows starting to freeze, middle still pretty much open.
Curious what guys would be catching near Driftwood since it's fairly shallow around that area. Is it lakers or whites mostly? Saw them and figured it was a waste of time as I've only ever caught fish there in 75 to 120 FOW.

There was a pretty significant temperature inversion for some of those cold weeks earlier in the fall that froze up lower elevation lakes. Spray probably didn't see as much cold as Lower K for example. That said, it's rarely frozen up much before December anyways, but the recent heat is certainly exacerbating the issue.

Not to mention that it's also much bigger than the Kananaskis Lakes too.

Turns out the guy I thought was at Kananaskis was elsewhere so my comment about ice there might have been off base.
I know Abraham stays open because of the wind but didn't realize Spray was anywhere near that windy.

tips for lakers?
Anyone toss out some tips for a first timer going after non-stocked lakers.
Done the cheese and corn thing lots at stocked lakes.
Thinking a tube with a chunk of smelt/herring around 30-50ft.. am I way off base?

Try all depths and fish both the bottom and mid column cause you never know where you might find them hanging out.
Flasher makes a huge difference for lakers, if you aren't marking then move.

The skating is terrific at Spray Lakes right now. The lake froze with no wind so it's like a sheet of glass and you can skate forever!
