What is the smallest fly size you will go to?

HAD to put on a 24 at the yellowstone spring creeks. Those fish scrutinized those flies. Will never tie on that small unless I have to.


I regularly use sz 20 though around Alberta.

I think the smallest I have used is a size 20.

I was out at the Morinville reservoir a couple of years ago and witnessed a Trico hatch. those mayflies were a size 28 if that! I bought some size 24 and size 26 and 28 hooks at the fishin' hole along with some #17 trico thread. if I could just learn to use this darned computer, I'd post those pics..
I haven't had the chance to use them yet.

16 is the smallest I will go, a 16 standard wire hook is very weak. I release trout so I don't want to play them to exhaustion. Size 16 nymph hooks are available in extra heavy wire so I use those.

I fished either a 22 or 24 Trico (?)only once that I can recall......without success I might add.
I've fished sz20 on occasion and have caught a few fish,but still can't claim membership to the 20/20 club,which truth be known is really the only reason I use 20s on occasion,lol.

20/20 is normal bow fair in the spring sz 20 black gnat kills in shallow eddies.

I have used size 22. Had to hang onto the hook with haemostats to tie it onto my tippet as I am pretty clumsy with my fingers. Didn't have any success. For the most part, I don't use anything under size 18.

I've tossed a couple of 24's overboard in frustration, does that count ?

This winter on the bow after examining the throat samples from some of the fish I noticed like size 22-28 red/olive/tan chironimids but red was the more dominant colour. So I tied up a bunch of size 20 red chironimids and actually had success using them since then. Just a gold tungsten bead head and a fine gold rib with red thin skin for a body.

Size 20 regularly in late summer/fall along streams like the Bow or Crow, and have used size 22's for fun (with success). I've caught good rainbows in lakes with #18-20 chironomids on tough days. I have some #24's ready for this year, just for fun. Lots of good nymphing on #18 and smaller flies, BTW.

If your using flies this small, (20-24 or lower) try Daiichi 1110 hooks --they have a large eye, so you don't need even smaller than 5x for a 22 hook. 6x will be fine all the way down to a #24 or 26 (if they even make them this small) on this bad boy. Good hooks --strong, and affordable at about $4.50 for a pack of 25.

20-22 is standard fare on the Bow in late summer to early fall. As well, size 18-20 nymphs are productive all winter.

Good to know about these hooks, I'll remember to look for them.

A friend tied this one up.

It is size 32 parachute royal coachman tied on a mustad gold flat hook. Also in the pic is a dime and a size 18 parachute purple haze.

I wouldn't have the necessary patience required to tie one of those on let alone tie one at the vice. That is pretty cool!

I have fished a 24, but 20 is the smallest I typically carry....I avoid tying below 18s.
