When built last cabin we had outfitter tent for sleeping. Bear ate all food, ate can of raid and even ate the bear spray. He went over the line when he drank our bottle of whisky.

My brother built the cabin I had on my line.

For some reason the Blacks liked that cabin and would trash it each summer.
Big brother got tired of that so he set out to discourage them.

He figured out that they usually climbed through the window to get in so he planted his ice pick, thoroughly sharped of course, just under that window with the point aimed at the window.

It sorta worked. When he returned in the fall there was gobs of Bear hair all over the cabin along with what appeared to be smeared blood and guts.
And the cabin was messed up far worse then it ever had been.
And it stank something awful.

Everything that could be broken, was, the door was splinters, the stove pipe all full of tooth holes and flattened. The dish pan looked like discarded piece of tinfoil, the lantern had tooth holes in the tank and the air pipes were bent and kinked.

It did nothing to discourage them either. They were back to their old tricks the next summer.

Brother however, never did that again.

I have bear boards out under each window and doors. Basically boards with a pile of nails pounded through it. The bears step on them and won't come near the windows again. I also have barbed wire on my front porch of one cabin and find hair on it. It seems to keep them off the porch

I've yet to see a bear home defence system that doesn't utilize electricity dissuade a determined grizzly from going somewhere it wants to go. I've seen where bears walked over nail boards then pulled razor wire off a shed, and chewed a hole through the wall.

But those measures can dissuade a half hearted bear attempts.

Gene Walters trapper from Sunset house would secure angle iron to corner of his cabins so grizzly would not rip off the siding. He had one bear dig right under cabin and try coming in through the floor.
