Question birds with bands?

Me and my dad have been hunting waterfowl these past weekends and haven't came across a band. I was wondering if anyone has got a band yet?

Banding is becoming less common. Other methods of tracking, such as GPS locator collars, colour coded neck bands on snow geese, etc.

I have gathered a few over the years, not as many as past years.

In my opinion, bands are a luck type of thing. I've been hunting waterfowl for 5 years (with my father) and I managed to get one last year. The old man has been hunting for 30+ years and got two last year. It can also depend on where and how much you hunt. But when you get one, it's an exciting time!!

Dad got one about 20 years ago and sent it in to Washington for more info.. It came back and I think the goose was 16 years old!! That would have explained how tough it was.. lol..

We got one duck and two specks this week with bands. Always like to hear about the status of the birds they were on. One discussion we had was how old a barbelly speck was, to have barbelly. Turned out that one we got in the last few years, was banded the year before as a juvie, had a seriously good barbelly on it, as a two year old.

I've been on many shoots and over the years hundreds of ducks/geese have been shot, I've never seen a collared/banded bird. My buddy shot one this year on a hunt I wasn't on but that's the only one I know of that has been shot by anyone I hunt regularly with at least recently.

Shot a few over the years. Only one neck band on a Canada back in late 80's. One interesting band was worth $100 and actually received the cheque in the mail

23 waterfowl seasons have come and gone for me. I have 5 duck bands all from mallard drakes and 1 lesser snow goose who was too young to fly when banded in the Sag River Delta, Alaska. 2 months and 6 days later it's migration ended in central Alberta.

Don't hold your breath. Out of 3500 or 4000 birds this year we killed maybe 6 birds with bands.

It isn't super common. Killed 2 Canadas in the same shoot this year that had bands. That was the only ones I came across. The other guys killed a few ducks and a speck and snow.

Wow! That's impressive...if you have been out EVERY day since beginning of season that is an average of 80 birds per day.

I'm not the only waterfowl guide on the board so your apology is accepted without being offered.

X2

That's impossible....the resident average is 3.3 birds per season. At that rate it would take the "average" resident over 1000 years to get a band.

Default scarce in the west

Like Pixel Shooter I have saved every band I found in over 40 years of waterfowl hunting, adding the "jewellery" to my whistle lanyard for the dogs.

It has been over 30 years since I found a banded duck or goose so my Alberta average is one every 10 years. I hunted the first 10 years in Ontario and averaged 1 per year.

Heard most banding programs have been hurt by budget cuts.

I guess you have never been around a decent bird outfitter then

I took over 100 guys in the first 6 weeks of the season. Had groups as big as 12 in camp at a time. It isn't too hard to kill limits of ducks for guys %85 of the time. Add in Canadas and Specks with a bunch of snows in the last 2-3 weeks of the season getting to 3500 birds is really more of the norm

No, I try to keep my distance from outfitters. You are definitely correct on that one!

In roughly 7 weeks of hunting time, that means you are averaging about 71 birds a day. If that's a normal day of hunting, you are doing it right. Snows are a different story, the guy I originally posted to lives in Calgary...not too many snows coming through here.
