Default Serious pike cannibalism at Wab

Well, I headed out fishing with JohninAB yesterday, and although the majority of the fishing that day was rather "meh" there was one event that is worth sharing.

We were fishing in some reeds sort of over by Sundance and I hooked in to a pike. At first it felt like one of the average little guys that we'd been catching all day, but then it suddenly turned solid. I figured that the little guy had nose dived into the weeds and wrapped himself up like they tend to do, so I hauled on the line and broke him free right near the boat, and that's when I saw that it was actually a much larger pike...I won't venture to guess a weight, but it was BIG!

As soon as John saw it he asked if I wanted him to net it, and I said that'd be a good idea, so he grabs the net and we were waiting for it to come around to where he could get it when suddenly it gives a good shake and takes off, leaving me with the much smaller pike that I had actually hooked that she had TOTALLY inhaled!!!

We were totally shocked. The larger pike had completely inhaled the smaller one...the small one couldn't be seen at all while the big one was on the line.

Sadly we obviously weren't able to get a pic of both of them, but we did snap a couple quick pics of the little guy for posterity.

I just gotta fire up the laptop to get the pics and then I'll post 'em up

I saw that happen with a small walleye once, my buddy is fighting a fish, thinking no big deal when all of a sudden he reel starts screaming, so he keeps fighting, and he pulls up a pike which we est around 15 lbs, we start bringing it towards the net when suddenly this beast does a violent head shake with it's mouth wide open, spites out the walleye (it didn't quite register to us this had happened at this point)and turns back and disappears into the deep. Disappointed my buddy chucked his rod down, only for it to start tugging again. We're like, wtf? N that's when we realized he had a small walleye on that the pike had completely inhaled! Made for a good story just like yours, but it was disappointing to loose a big one, at that time that pike would have been his PB, But hey, that's fishing!

So here's the fish that got inhaled. Would have had to have been a pretty decent sized pike to completely hork this guy down.

And here's the only damage he had from the encounter.

Not uncommon for large pike to chow down on a smaller one.

Still kinda cool to see it happen.

True, and I've caught plenty of pike on lures that look like pike to prove it.

That being said I've only had that happen one other time, but in that case both fish were significantly smaller.

Glad I was there and witnessed the whole ordeal. Definitely the highlight of the day. Sure wish we could have netted the big one.

That is crazy ............ That must have been a BIG pike. To not have marks all the way down the body indicates a BIG mouth able to swallow that one in a single take.

I can definitely see that happening at Wab - there are some amazing BIG pike in there. There is no doubt she was BIG.

I've had at least two pike smash a smaller one I was bringing in at Wab - both were side swiped but I know the big girls will go head first if they can.

We left you guys about 2:30 having spent 5 hours or so on the water - caught quite a few pike but nothing big. Fishing is still great as always at Wab.

Cool Story.

We got off the water at 9pm. Tried out a new area, not very good yesterday but does hold some promise. Fishing for us was slow although there were short bursts of "activity". All in all it was like we all agreed yesterday when EZM bid adieu, was better than being at work.

Thanks Huffy. See you and J-Roc had a good trip on Saturday.

That's awesome, the story's cool but the pictures really show it had to be a nice fish. Congrats for now but she's still out there, only a matter of time before you see her again.

I caught a pike around the same size out at Wabamun earlier this summer. I must have deleted the picture but he had teeth marks all over him, very lucky to have got away from the big pike that had grabbed him.
