Default more boat questions

even though i am not in the immediate position to buy another boat i was browsing kajiji and noticed that BC seems to have a lot more boats and much more variety then alberta. my question is, is buying a boat like buying a car? if you buy it out of province would a boat need some sort of out of province inspection? is there more wear on the boats(hull) if its been in saltwater then fresh water?

No out of province inspection required. I bought my boat in Saskatchewan this year so I know firsthand. As far as saltwater goes, I would be most concerned about the motor, ensuring that it gets a proper flush each time it is pulled out of the water

go where the Boats are !!

what I am refering to is this....

Ontario, where there is a great concentration of people/ lakes and boats
the pickin's are great.

I bought my boat in Ont. had it shipped and still saved approx. 4 K
on a 14 K boat.

it only makes sense .... its hard to get a good deal on a John Deere
combine in Toronto and its hard to get a good selection of boats in
Alberta.

If your looking for a used boat ...... the dealerships in Ont. are
really motivated in the Fall. They are sitting on trade ins and they
dont want to have their money tied up until next may.

My intent is not to hurt the local boat dealers but its such a huge
diff. in price..... its hard to ignore.

see you on the water.....

I would be scared of an engine thats spent its life in saltwater. It can do horrible things in a very short time if not properly taken care of.

Your insurance company may request a marine inspection on a used boat. I was fortunate enough that they would accept well documented photos instead of dishing out $400

If you buy a boat from a Province or State that has Zebra Mussels (Like Ontario) make sure that the boat stays out of the water and is completely dried out for at least 30 days. We do not want these invasive species in Alberta...

All it will take is one infected boat to spread them and kill our already limited fisheries.....

I bought a boat from bc last year. The trailer I got a temporary license plate for one day from an icbc. The original owner and I did the transfer there. The boat I received the info on beforehand and phoned my insurance company (thru your home insurance) to cover me so I had insurance the whole time.

Default Zebra Mussels

Thanks!

Zebra Mussels are a very dangerous invasive species.
All of us need to be aware of them and do everything possible to prevent their spread.
They have invaded the great Lakes and have spread across the US.
They are easily transported from one water body to the next by boats.
The young are microscopic and cannot be seen without a microscope.
They can survive for up to 30 days out of water if the conditions are damp (live well, wet anchor line...)
Once they become established in a water body they cannot be eradicated or controlled and over time will kill the system because they filter out all the good nutrients and leave nothing for other aquatic species to live on.
They do not filter out bad things like Blue Green Algae and allow it to get worse.
Our lakes are ideal conditions and are at a high risk for them to become established.

Several boats that have Zebra Mussels found on them that were purchased from Zebra Mussel areas have been intercepted at the border this year that were headed to our lakes.

There is lots of information about them on the internet..

I keep a close eye on kijiji although haven't been following BC have been looking at AB, SK and MB. MB by far has the cheapest fishing oriented boats whereas AB has more fish and ski or just ski boats. Every once in a while I look at ON and you can definitely find some good deals there but transport would be a pain.

It almost gets discouraging looking for a reasonably priced fishing oriented boat in AB/SK. There are so few that fit the criteria I look for and whenever I find them the guys want what I consider to be ridiculous money.

Walleye Central .com and go to classified ads

Lots of good boats for sale in N Dakota and Mt. just about as close as BC and most likely less money. Just make sure you get a title with the trailer.

we bought a bayliner last march from everett, washington. easy easy to import it into canada... our goverment only cares about the trailer, just make sure it is admissable (RIV.ca)

we didn't need any inspection on the boat but the trailer will need to be inspected.

one thing that the RIV inspection guy (canadian tire) told me is that he has failed many trailers due to not having a light for the license plate... wherever you buy your boat from make sure that light is in place.
