Scents at snare sites?
Do any of you snare men out there ever used any type of scent at your snare sites as a better attractant when it is really cold? I know frozen meat doesn't give off a lot of scent. Good thing the Ravens and magpies are doing their thing though. I've used pure skunk scent, and I think it makes a difference, but I am always looking for some better tips. Thanks.

I haven’t, but I want to try skunk scent for sure.
Curious if there’s any other scent that’s easy to get that works good.
Thanks

I do it fairly often. Cotton swab with skunk essence and hange a dozen snares around it. Usually will pick me up a handful of yotes in the right spot over a season. Best in big willow patches.
Also I used a bit of my lynx lure this year to bring yotes up and down a creek and over to areas I have snares with a tree over the creek. Seems to have worked a few times.

We tried skunk and didn't notice a big of enough difference to continue using it for that.plus more often than not i ended up with some on me somewhere. Ravens are by far the best lure, I've often thought about having a loud raven recording going around the bait somewhere. However I think of some weird stuff sometimes. Never tried it and probably won't.

scents
I have tried scents as well, and the ones that seem to work (skunk junk , etc) get everywhere and I have a hard time keeping the rest of the gear clean. I find just getting some birds around is all it takes to get the dogs in unless you are very careful about scent control, or take Gord Klassens advice and get the snares in a week or two before. Then a bit of scent is all it takes as the steel has no odor, just walk in, check the snares then stink up the area and let the dogs come in.

Skunk flavoured.. a real.musky scent. Label is worn off bottle but I think it is a long distance call from Milligan .

Nice catch, Cam!
Do you ever use that beaver soup that you made?
I never use scent but I might have to give it a try.

No I didn't Dave , I still have a part bottle left . It spilled in the back of my truck and after I got done cleaning it up I couldn't stand the smell so it sits out behind the barn..lol. Maybe I'll use it next year .. Maybe.

If a guy buys some bottled skunk essence, how long does it stay good for if the lid is on the bottle? Buddy and I are looking to buy some from Halfords, but I won’t be able to use it til next season because I’m working lots right now.
Thanks

I like Barnes marten or fisher lure. Both rich in skunk smell and comes as paste. Just paste alittle on tree and You can smell it for 100 yards. Last but not least is you do not stink up the truck or your coat, hang the bottles outside the cabin though or you will give your dog hell and kick him out of the cabin.

For you guys throwing scent around. Use a tampon. Not only do they absorb more then you care to know, they even come with handy strings to tie them onto stuff.

Besides it will make hunters wonder what goes on in the woods during the off season.

scents
Problem with the skunk scents is that's really hard to avoid that stuff getting onto your clothes and gloves and then into your vehicle. You rubb it onto the trees and then accidentally rub against it at a later date.
Maybe if you use disposable gloves, carry it in zip lock bags, and apply it to cotton balls placed in a perforated container attached to tree.
The birds cant steal it ...and visible to yourself.

If you want a cheap skunk scent. Melt 8 0z of Vaseline in microwave and mix in 1 0z of skunk essence. You can add food coloring if u want just to make it easier to see how much your putting out. An oz of pure skunk quill that you collect yourself from a skunk is by far the best. Works great as a marten and Fisher call lure also.

I carry it in a ziplock bag inside a disposable latex glove .. never need to touch the button . Just leave it in the glove and turn lid on and off . Besides you dont need to add it every time you check . This stuff has been out well over a week and even I can still smell it .

This is an unfair test as you are the snare master... yotes come from miles around just to be in the presence of greatness..
