Default Unemployed and looking for any work...

Hey there everyone, I have been laid off since last year and was traveling around for the last couple of months. Due to the economic downturn in Alberta, I'm finding it very difficult to find any suitable job. I am not just looking for a job but a place I can grow and hopefully make a career out of. I am aware it's not the time to be picky so I am willing to make sacrifices to get any sort of income. I thought I would throw a message out here and see if anyone knows a place that's hiring? or could throw any suggestions my way? I am a fit 25 year old guy living in Calgary at the moment, I have a clean and valid class 5 license and all of my basic safety tickets like H2S, CSTS, First Aid etc. I have even contemplated re-locating but that is my absolute LAST option. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated in these tough times!!

Try and find something you know, the tickets are fine but those are very common. I haven't looked in awhile, but lots of online jobsites that cycle most of what is being looked for, kijiji or craigslist. Not sure what your background is, but physically showing up to jobsites or companies of interest ready to work still goes well. If you are technologically inclined, it seems to be an industry not hit too hard at this time. Just a few points to ponder. Good luck in the search.

CP Rail is also hiring in Calgary and other areas around Alberta.. Go to cpr.ca and have a look at job postings.

Default job hunt

If I could do it all again I would enter the elec trade. If you want an oilfield job (which is limited right now) I would show up at 630am at these companies dressed for work, especially on the weekend when the punks are too drunk to get up. I have gotten many jobs doing this before I got my j-man ticket and own business. Also an xray company is always looking for guys, most can't handle the hrs they work.

I feel your pain brother. I have been mostly unemployed since last March and just recently got laid off for a second time in less than a year. I am going to put my Class 1 to work. If you are going to change course you might as well goo big.

I wish you luck.

Yes it is non destructive testing and they are still in demand. I worked with them on a weekly basis for 20 some years and to date I have yet to get a demerit on my record with absa. Not related, just sharing but they do work long hours as already said and can be away from home for extended periods. Starting out is tough as its not an average trade to get into but the boys I've worked with over the years really enjoy what they do.

I'm a ndt tech. NDT is pretty closely tied to new construction. So it is a bit slow right now. It is however a very good career if you can get a foot in the door.

Try edmonton and area out, everyone up here seems to be working. The new refinery is going full swing on construction, other plants seem to be getting put together, the henday and its never ending construction are still going. There are some big turn arounds coming up at processing facilities this spring.

I dont know about ndt, companies are shaving back to what is required vs going beyond and being pro active.

Forestry seems to be hiring all over the place, you would have to get out of calgary but the pay is decent and smells better than the oil and gas stuff. Lol

tough times out there. I'd start by thinking of "moving" as more of a reality than a last option. there are jobs in the city but not many. you need to get out there send out resumes and talk to everyone you know.

good luck

if relocating becomes an option I know we are getting busy again in BC..... the only problem with here though is the pay scale is not like Alberta's...Our son reminds my husband about that every payday where he then gets reminded that he can move back to Alberta............... lol oh joys of kids working in the family business

Took my Class 1 a few years ago, they wanted people with many years experience to hire. Maybe worse right now. I would check out opportunities before spending $2000 on a license. You may be good in BC.

Look at construction.

Still going pretty strong, but will slow mid to later this year.

Labourer would be around 18-20$/hr though. Don't expect oilfield pay.

Infrastructure spending will be through the roof for a couple years. The Stoney trail should go full circle in short order. I would guess paving companies will need staff night and day all summer long.
