Still bird hunting here, pheasant and partridge are open till the end of the month.
Birds are scarce though, lots of walking in heavy, hard snow with little reward. Still better than work!
Can't believe how tough my little shorthair is, -20 to -30, and running hard and hunting as determined as ever. Thought he might need a sweater or something but it doesn't bother him at all. I think he is more comfortable out there than my lab was, mostly due to him running so hard where my lab would be played out and walking be behind me after an hour.

Decent pheasant

Impersonating a wirehair, funny how every picture of him has his lip tucked in

Great pictures Justin.. Roosters looking good, it's surprising how much cold a shorthair can handle as long they stay dry..

Default Kiva

Well, the hunting season is over, but there is still lots of training to do!

Got Kiva out and into a few coveys of Huns a week ago. -15C made for icy beards.....

And icy bums!!

But with that dense coat of hers, she handled the cold and snow better than I would have imagined.

Another shot from a training day, back when we didn't have any snow.

And of course, we need a glamour shot!

I beards and icy bums are a good thing. It means the coat is doing its job keeping the heat in and the cold out.

Knowing how much Rob HATES pheasants by this time of year we are doing our very best to put him in his happy place for at least a month before chicks and eggs arrive for the next year!

Come on Winch, you know all pheasant hunters are stinking rich; I am sure they had it flown in fresh.

Had to go find some pics so we could get this thread off of page 15...

This one is from a couple years ago, the last time my Dad came out from the coast to hunt. Parker is on the left, and Katy the GSP is on the right. Katy is a hunting machine, and I give my Dad crap all the time for not hunting her more.

This GWP belongs to a friend of a friend in England. The next couple shots are from the CLA Game Fair (>1/2 a million people attend the show over 4 days).

There was a fair bit more variety of dogs in England (if you ignore the flocks of Springer Spaniels everywhere....), like this German Longhair Pointer.

Italian Spinone; neat dog, kind of like the Clumber Spaniel of the pointing dogs.

This was my friend's Bavarian Hound, which unfortunately died last year. They are a desirable (yet uncommon) dog for deer stalkers / managers; job is to follow up lost deer.

Obviously he wasn't an "upland dog", but he was my buddy for the 2 weeks I was there.

More Pudelpointers....

Kiva as a pup, 'cause she was just so damn cute!

Parker still looking for birds even though the hunt was over.

I think this was Parker's first Ruffed Grouse, taken a couple years back on a trip to Smithers BC. He did surprisingly well for having only seen one other Ruffy in his life, and that was 3 years earlier. Over 4 days we managed to take 3 on the wing in that thick rainforest tangle. Many birds I heard flush but never saw so much as a flash of feather. Shotgun is a Beretta BL-4.

A southern Alberta mixed-bag. 1908 (IIRC) GH Parker.

I have posted most of these before, but not in this thread (maybe not on this forum), and I love my dogs, so...

An early retrieve in Parker's career. I think he was on his second season.

An opening day double.... and Parker still looking for more. He gets quite put-out when I want to take photos; I don't think he appreciates that I want some pictures of him, in fact, I think he is of the opinion that there are much more important things to do - like HUNT! Someone always asks: the shotgun is a Browning Double Auto (the steel version, not the Twelvette).

Not Upland, but Snow Geese are soooo yummy.

Haven't done a whole lot of real early season duck hunts since the evening I took the next two pics.

I am getting itchy just looking at it (those are mosquitos).

But my elderly neighbour and I managed some ducks.

One of the earliest photos I have of Parker. I just don't have many of him from when he was a pup; probably because I was still shooting film at the time, and my phone was used for talking...

MORE Snow Geese.... still so damn yummy. Browning Double Auto again.

I don't think I posted this one earlier. Parker and I pull lots of roosters out the cattails. Okay, PARKER pulls lots of roosters out of the cattails, right after knock 'em back into them.
