Default Willow Valley Measuring Night

I understand that the Willow Valley measuring night is a 'must-see' in Alberta. Does anybody out there know when and where it may be this year?

It's always in Pincher Creek. Last year it was Jan 13. It will probably be the Saturday close to this date.

Go for sure!! I have been a few times, always some nice trophies, and some great stories. Ran into at least one other board member last year.

Always some nice trophies, the sheep year a few years back was awesome. Not sure what this years theme will be. Hope i can make it.

Thanks for the quick response, guys. I have a set of horns that I believe are worth measuring this year. Is it practice for there to be official Boone and Crockett scorers at the event? Wondering how close my taping is...........

I doubt you'll get a B&C score there but you never know. All the guys will be certified AFGFA measurers though.

Official Boone and Crockett score guy normally there (Jim Proudfoot). Measured a great trophy for us a few years back. You could call the Pincher Creek club to check for sure. If you have a great trophy I'd recommend taking it, it will likely result in you hearing some great stories and they have some fun little prizes (things like knives, moccasins, fishing rods for the fish entries etc). Always a few great trophies, sheep over 190'', antelope over 80'' (biggest i remember was 86'') couple 200'' gross non-typical deer. Great sausage samples and stuff like that too. Wish i could find my pics from the sheep year, there were sure a few beauty rams.

BTW- Its supposed to be the biggest trophy night in western North America, lots of local trophies but lots of stuff from accross Alberta (and occasionally further away). Competitions are Alberta based, they are entered in the AFGA contest as well. Ted Morton was one of the guest speakers last year, big event.

I'm going by memory here, so I might be wrong but I think the measuring is all done the week before and in order to officially enter you need to have purchased a Willow Valley membership prior to the hunting season. I think Paul Erickson is the current President and he might be able to provide additional information. Regards, Mike

To win the yearly awards, you have to be a member. They do have a day challenge for members and non-members. e.g. if you are a non-member and bring in the biggest ram, you win a trophy (I think)

Default Willow Valley

Hey guys, here's the facts about the upcoming trophy day.

It is in Pincher Creek at the community hall on January 12th doors open at 8am. There is scoring done on the day of, but please bring your heads early as there is always a ton being measured. If your head has already been measured by an official P&Y or B&C scorer please bring the score sheets to save us time. There will be official B&C measurers on hand (Jim Proudfoot and Paul Erickson), however I don't believe they will be measuring any trophies at that time for entries into B&C as time is of the essence. All other measurers are AFGFA certified. Also for local entries (near Pincher) we ask that you drop the heads off at Rocky Mountain Taxidermy in Cowley previous to the evening of Jan. 10th so that they may be scored, again to save time on the actual date. These heads will automatically be taken to and set up at the hall. This years theme is "Deer" and "Youth", and new youth categories have been created. If any Willow Valley member have any crankers from this or years past please bring them for all to enjoy. Please come down and enjoy. You'll likely never see such a collection of great trophys under one roof! Oh, our guest speaker is Ray Makowecki.
For further info please call Paul Erickson @ 403-628-2462 or Jim Dejax@ 403-628-3881

They do a lot of scoreing the days and weeks before for the local heads but if you have your heads their before 10.00 am on the day of the show and buy a membership for the next year they will score your head for the day challange award... Willow Valley is a trophy club only and are not affialated with AFGA at all... the memberships are eather 20 or 25 bucks {can't remember} their are ussuly some awesome heads there, Milo had his buck there a few years ago, C B has had his Elk there before, D B brings his big mule most years and lots more.... the place get packed though, so if you want a chance to walk around and get some photos you will want to make sure you get there early...

Actually Willow Valley is an affiliate of the AFGA but unlike most clubs, their membership does not automatically make you an AFGA member.

Well I'm sure glad I asked. Thanks for all the information from everyone. See you there.... But it does sound like I should get this sheep measured prior to arrival. On that note, where should a guy be heading to to do that? If you know of any 'sheep-nuts', he may want to score this one......

How big is the ram cape?...If you think it's over 180, I'd get an official B&C scorer to score it before. By all means still take it down to Willow Valley as well. Where are you located? I can likely get you in touch with a B&C scorer.

I've got him breaking clearly into the 190's. But I'm no official measurer. I live in Spruce Grove, so if you know of someone around here I'll take your advice and get it done prior to the Willow Valley. Thanks Sheep.

I heard of a 190+ sheep from a guy in Cardston. It'll be nice to see one from down south if it shows up.

That ram is not 190+. Have had him in my hands, and hopefully he'll break 180.

I do look forward to Willow Valley this year, and hope to corner Ray Makowecki so I can personally thank him for cheating me out of a Mule Deer tag for 2008.

I wonder if our fine Minister of SRD is going to show up this year. Maybe he can explain to everyone why he's cutting the quota of resident tags out by giving them to land owners in a couple WMU's.

chuck do you know if that ram will be there. I'd like to get a look at it even if it only goes 180.
