Default Gunsmith question

I picked up an Eddystone P1917 30-06 barelled action.
I figured I could do something with it as the barrel was very nice inside and slugged at .305 to .307 or .308 just depending on how the calipers were sitting on the land and grooves.so its good and tight.
the action itself looked good. it had been hand filed down on the rear to get rid of the ears. the duck pond was filled with a steel plug and silver soldered in (i believe it was solder). just needs to be tapped for a rear peep or scope.
here's the problem. who ever had it before i found it decided it would be a good idea to drill a hole about .335 in diameter right into the top of it. right in front of the factory hole that was filled.
so a long explanation for a short question.
what should I do with it? try to fix it? or is it worth the trouble?
I plan on putting Williams receiver site on top of it and it covers the damage done so you cant see it. but I know its there.
it was a free rifle so its not like I have alot of money invested yet.

Shoot it first. See if it worthy of cosmetic repair and then decide

Welding it will be to hot, above the critical temperature it will change the physical properties of the metal, ie it will harden and become more brittle in the heat affected zone around the weld. If it's to brittle it's dissent able to cracking/ shattering. Filling it with solder is probibly a lot better choice, much cooler. Sildering is done around 450 c ( around there). Critical temp of steel is around 1200, tug and mig welding is way above that. If you could let it normalize properly yiu might have a change with welding but unlikely.

If you fire it and find it worth keeping, it would be worth a trip to a gunsmith for a proper repair. David Henry Gun Builder, a member of the forum, could probably answer your question best!!!!
