I would without hesitation go with the 7mm remmag. More selection all round. More rifles to choose from, more factory ammo available in more stores, and for reloading it's a no brainer. That's how I see it anyway.

I like the 270 wsm, but overall the 7mm mag is more versatile if you're shooting extreme ranges. High BC heavy for calibre bullets, as long as the twist rate will handle them.

Based on ballistics and recoil they may as well be the same gun at short (100-300yards) or long range (250-500 yards) when using a 150 grain pill. BUT the 7MM is not limited to 150 being the largest, readily available offering for either off the shelf ammunition or for reloading.

So, if its purely buy-ammunition-go-hunting - type use, either is perfectly fine.

Where the 7MM gets the clear nod is long range reloading options, extreme long range options (500+), and readily accessible ammunition.

I now have a 7MM RM, but for the longest time was looking for a .270WSM and would not hesitate to trade off to that gun as all my shooting is inside 500 yards and I reload.

I've shot my 7rm for quite a few years and have no complaints. However I really like the 270wsm aswell - I think I would base my decision on which rifle I liked more.

For all intents and purposes it will do exactly the same thing and feel like you are shooting the same gun, as recoil is so close. I agree with Doublegun, it would come down to the gun I was looking at. If they are the same gun then I am going 7 Rem.

X3....if you are comparing two totally different rifles/used/deals/wutever.....pick the one you like best or best deal or both?
If you are trying to decide between two identical new rifles, same make/model etc I'd pick the 7RM for all the reasons already mentioned and then some.

Regular 270 isn't that far off both of your mentions and that would lessen the gap between ammo availability, rifles to choose from, etc etc. Probably score one for a lower cost as well and that can go towards glass where it's equally important.

270wsm to 270 with the same bullet is a whopping 100 fps. I doubt the deer, elk, etc care much.

270 150 gr to 7mm 160's is also right around 100 fps. Same acknowledgement from the deer, elk etc. Hit them where you're supposed to with either and they fall over. Hit them where you're not supposed to with either and they don't.

I would stay away from all straight cases (WSM, etc..) and use a warm hand load out of a 280 Rem and not a 7 Mag.

Have played with lots of calibers and 280Rem in a 24" barrel is the best compromise in terms of feeding, recoil, flat trajectory, case efficiency and killing power. You can easily push a 150 Spitzer out of a 280Rem at slightly over 3,000 fps with no pressure.

Just my 0.2 cents.

Now you're talking my language. The 280 just seems to flat out kill everything I point it at. It's my "Big Gun" now.

I would also go .270 win if I was choosing, over owned more rifles in .270 than an other calibre and it's always worked spectacularly for me.

Again, I'm sure that there are advantages to sone of the higher ballistic coeffecient bullets you can load in a 7mm, but it's tough to beat the non magnums (7mm-08, 270, 280, 30-06, etc.) fpr shootability and performance on game.

I'd say 280 rem might be a bit better than a 270 in theory, but you mentioned ammo availability, and tje 270 win has a lot of good factory ammo available everywhere that sells ammunition.

Default Short mag or long mag?

Some people get the short mag bug, forgetting what the short mag was designed for. Light weight rifle, short action, light weight ammo, designed to lighten the load for mountain hunting, with the same performance of the long belted magnums.
So, ask yourself what you want the rifle to do, and can you accept big recoil from such. If you hunt mainly from a truck, and carry only short distances, then a heavier rifle is more practical with a more heavy recoiling cartridge. Action length is not so important, and adds a bit more weight.
Find a rifle you like, decide from there.

If going custom gun route I would go 270 WSM. Only if you plan on having something different. I don't have a 270 or 7mm Mag but do think both are good choices. For longer range shooting is what I am using as an example here. In the 270 WSM with a 26" barrel with enough twist to stabilize the 165 gr Matrix. 7mm Mag enough twist to stabilize a 180 Berger hybrid because I think the 7 Mag doesn't have enough horsepower for the 195 gr. If all your hunting/practice will be 500 yds and under I'd say pick which ever one you get a good deal on. If not reloading and shooting factory go with the 7mm Mag.

.270, 280, .270 wsm, 7mm Rem are all good rounds.Myself, I like shorter barrels and this eliminates the last two. I get good velocities with the .270 with 22+ 19" barrels- .280 should be the same

Got both, but if it came down to one gun, it would be the 7 mm.

If you have no need to shoot bullets heavier than 150grs, there is no real difference between the two. Choose whichever comes in the rifle you like best.

If you need/want to shoot bullets greater than 150, the 7mm is the obvious choice. If you shoot factory, the 7mm has more options.

Personally, I would buy a Kimber Montana in 270WSM. But that is my personal choice. You need to consider all the opinions given here and make your decision.

I was actually looking for a 7 mag 2 years ago. But found a Tikka 270 wsm ss on sale for a good deal brand new. So I bought it. I don't reload, yet, but to my surprise that gun loves Fed Fusion 150g's as well as blue box.(don't trust these especially at short range). When sighting it in, I put the first 2 bullets through the same hole at 100 yards. For a second I thought something was wrong with my scope, but then took the 3rd shot and ended up with a sub half moa group. Damn those tikkas can shoot. And out hunting the fusion round, although not as fast as some of the higher end rounds. Has a BC of .499. Respectable for ammo that costs 45$ a box.
Just hard to find ammo sometimes. I'm actually thinking of selling it for a good 7 mag. Just want something with better ammo availability.
But I really love this round, and rifle. Light, decent recoil, and it drops them quick. Also it is good for Elk out to 750 Yards going by the stats of 1800fps and 1200flbs energy with the fusion round. That's going by some gun builders minimum stats for shooting elk anyway. Not saying I would ever take that shot. And have read and seen a vid of a guy take down a big buck at 1000 yards with those 165g bullets out of the same rifle, same barrel twist.
And if I reloaded, I would keep it. But if anyone is looking for a good shooting Tikka 270wsm, and has a good 7 mag for trade. PM me. It's also got the titanium recoil lug in it, and only has maybe 70-80 rounds at the most through it. And is in good shape, don't think there are any marks or anything on it.
