Default Yellow bellied Marmots

Have one of these critters living in my woodpile. Never seen one before, was shooting magpies at the time I noticed this giant gopher sitting on my old fence posts. Anyway are they considered pests? Will it get into my garden or digg giant holes in my law?

They can destroy a garden in short order.

They are also known to chew brake hoses and other rubber parts on autos.

Believe it or not, I spent a few summers live trapping marmots in Yukon as part of an ecology research project . We trapped Hoary marmots, but this may also work on YBMs.

At first, we had trouble getting them to enter the traps...until we discovered they were attracted to human urine. Set the trap, dribble some pee on the trigger, and give it some time.

We would often pre-bait our traps and by the 3rd day the hoary marmots were essentially waiting by the trap for us to come by again.

Might work for YBM too!

To add to my post - we didn't use any other bait along with the pee...no veg, no nothing...just pee on the trigger.

Haha, well that would be no problem, I'll give it a try and see if it works. Thanks for the tip.
