Floor mats are a must...

But I do LOVE the milk crates! They are so useful...

-I have one cut to custom fit the powerhead for my auger and holds extra gas.

-one for the little buddy heater and 1 lb propane bottles when it is a mild day and you just need a little warmth.

-one for the 20lb propane and sunflower for the colder days.

-one for the marcum cam. I carry it in there then flip it for a viewing stand between the double wide holes.

And they all line up nicely and keep my gear organized in the otter sled.

And oddly enough, I like sitting on a over-turned milk crate WAAAAAY better than a folding camp chair. If you need to move fast when that big pike smashes your rig, trying to struggle your way out of those crappy folding chairs is not fun!

Thanks Chris. Im in the deep south so a bit to far to trek for a milk crate. They sound almost more useful than duct tape!

My current shack is a canvas unit with wood floor and wood ends, I could not go back to ice floor. It is 4x8 and I use a seat that is on a swivel with a folding back, under it is a square insulated 'cooler' about the size of a 5 gallon pail standing up. I use a rod bag for all the stuff, catalytic heater and sometimes a fish camera.

The new shack when I get it done will be set up for overnight stays if necessary, tv on the wall for fish cam, solar panel, lights, wood stove, storage, folding bench with storage under it, etc.

Will your new shack be a portable, put up and take down style or more of a permanent shack?

My 2 man "Mobile Field Office" is 15+ years old & it's the best shack I've every owned, don't believe they make them anymore. It's compact, light weight, 72L x 60W x 74H has a heavy black canvas tarp, molded plastic/wood floor with two large removable plywood hole openings. I modified it with a trap door to accommodate my camera, it sets up in 5 min or less & it can be moved without taking it down & towed behind the truck to a new spot. The custom S/S propane stove/heater with quick coupler works great, I can fish & stay connected as required. It's on Lake "X" but you'll never see me it's got stealth capabilities!

Zip ....

You can get all sorts of dairy crates, plastic bread trays, beverage size crates at Drader Manufacturing in Edmonton just off of the Whitemud north on 50th.

They makes these products there and sell a wide assortment of products, in all sorts of sizes, for pretty cheap. You can pack all of your stuff in there. I have one in the truck under the rear seats for my tools, paper towels, bungees, maps etc... a few in my boat holding oil, booster cables, rope etc....

Any size you can imagine. Way stronger than rubbermaid type tubs.

Go to the Safeway in crescent heights. On the side wall at the back is a mountain of milk crates. And they don't miss them.

Both are semi permanent, the first is a 12' camper I got yesterday, I just Haeli to figure out how to do a swing away axle, or wether drilling half holes, dropping the axles in the holes.

The big project is a very strong but very light aluminum framed, aluminum skinned skid unit.

How to get milk crates?
Walk into superstore. Go to milk aisle. Grab milk crate. Use it as shopping bag. Proceed to check out with it. Use the self checkout if you feel nervous.
Or so I've heard.

Me, I got a 3 legged folding stool, a rubbermaid tote that fits in my sled that holds my propane, heater, tackle, bait, rags, and other paraphernalia. Of course my rod is in there as well. I just have a little 2 man so with all that in there it's a little crowded. Hand auger gets wiped down and left in the sled after each use. I need to pick up some floor mats and a collapsible shovel, tote lid works but it's flimsy, then I'm set.

Well, that and I'm waiting on some replacement poles too. Slipped on the ice (floor mats!!!) my last outing and ended up falling on one of the hubs and shattered a pole. $23 for 4 poles from eskimo seems good to me, at least next time one breaks I'll be able to fix it on the ice instead of having to hunker down in the wind to get my dinner limit.

Depends on if the kids are with me or not.
Without them : heater, cooler with lunch stuff, coleman propane drip coffee maker, chair, floormats, water jug

With: all the above plus : blankets, portable dvd player, handheld video game units, or ipods (whichever is charged), 5 gallon pail potty, way more snacks, couple of little shovels so they can play in the snow, anything else I think will keep them on the ice for more than twentyfive minutes.....

I keep what I can in those big blue tubs, and use the tubs as tables for the dvd and coffee. Cant go without the coffee...
