Default Failure to provide in Alberta

We can argue all we want about politics. I haven’t seen this posted here yet.

This should put it all in perspective.
The checks and balances are not happening with at risk groups.

Pretty sad, for sure the parents need to be locked up, but then the have 3 or 4 other adults kids, why didn’t they do anything to help their brother out!

If we did have a death penalty then this will be the best court penalty for the parents of the 27 year old

I think at some time, all parents in a situation like this, arrive at a point where they can't cope, even though they might not be willing to admit it. Sounds like a very demanding situation where state intervention was long over due. At some point, the young man would have to be institutionalized, no way around it. Question being, why it took so long ? We should pity them.

Having dealt with a severely handicapped son myself I know too well how easy it is for things get way out of control despite parents best intentions.

More then once the bureaucracy has turned a blind eye to parents concerns.

We were very fortunate that a nurse intervened on our behalf before it went to far and our son was placed in an institution where he could be properly cared for.

Up to then our family doctor kept telling us we were too young to be parents, and that nothing was wrong with our son when it was obvious he had big problems we couldn't cope with.

Every week or so we had to have him admitted to emergency because he would quit breathing and go limp and blue. We always managed to get him help before it was too late no thanks to our doctor.

I'm not sure what would have happened if he had died while in our care but a charge of neglect or even murder would not have been impossible.

Obviously I don't know what happened in this case but I know if the bureaucracy dropped the ball they wouldn't admit it.

Tomas is part of the ministry's At Home program, which is intended to provide respite and medical support for children and youth with severe disabilities and complex health needs.

But COVID-19's physical distancing and reduced services has meant that medical appointments were postponed or cancelled and all of their therapy sessions disappeared, leaving Klara to manage as well as she could. And the 13 hours a month of respite she relied on has also disappeared, so there is no opportunity to rest and recharge.

They neglected their 27 year old son that couldn't provide for himself to the point that he weighed 43 pounds, you need more details before you can judge that? Really....
