Never a dumb Question...Some are silly...but not dumb..we all have to learn somewhere...

A lot depends..Is it your field...or do you have permission to be on that field...are you in City limits...

If its in the county/rural not City limits and you have permission to be there...have at it ...safely

Many citys have bylaws regulating where you can shoot a bow...most are on recognized and legitimite safety ranges within city limits...

and lastly ...How fast can you run with a bow and target...lol... [bad joke]

Not a dumb question, I've asked myself as well....

Unless the parcel is 40 acres or bigger within the City limits AND privately owned (yeah, like that's a possibility) you cannot fire a weapon (including bows, pellet guns, sling shots, etc)

Like Lefty stated, there are 2 pro-shops with lanes, as well as a very good outdoor range along Highway 8 across from Elbow Springs Golf Course. Membership at the outdoor range is relatively cheap and 24/7 access.

"No person shall shoot an arrow from a bow of any nature, over, across, or along any portion of a Street, public place, or upon any land owned by The City unless otherwise authorized pursuant to a bylaw of The City of Calgary, or in the case of a Park, unless authorized by the Director, Parks or his designate. "

On your own land or other private land you have permission for, shoot away. Public places and parks are areas controlled by the City. If it was simply illegal to shoot a bow within city limits it would simply say so.

Ok, so I'm wrong about the size of parcel. I'll admit that.

However! I would also strongly advise against shooting where a "sky draw" may accidentally let an arrow loose to wherever, or for that matter, having a target setup at your back fence where an arrow may penetrate through to the neighbours yard. Even standing on the end of your own driveway, shooting into your own garage *may* garnish more attention than what you want to deal with from the authorities.

Even though our cul-de-sac is close-knit, an anonymous phone call to the CPS is more headache than I want to deal with; it's simpler to go to the range.

Absolutely. Local residents don't know the law. Half the time the police don't. No need to gather trouble for yourself.

My uncle lives in calgary and shoots his bow from the end of his driveway into his garage, so far no one has gave him trouble. Guess it all depends on your neighbours.

That's all fine and dandy....until you have an equipment malfunction and send an arrow into your neighbors car or house.

I used to shoot in my backyard too....until I had a release malfunction and send an arrow through my shed into the fence behind me....if it missed the fence it would have been sticking out of the neighbors house.

I now shoot in the basement....concrete walls are much safer and draw no attention.

Common sence prevails including concreate walls such as a barn
or other structure.

You all have to decide for yourself what is safe.

I used to shoot 70lbs target at hay bales at the end of a
barn 80 yards long.
Had lights, radio, body heat from the cows, shot year round.
Then one morning in the end of January, I slammed a shot first
thing in the morning right through the target and bales and it
came to rest past my feet as I let the bow arm down.

The dame arrow was went on skittering past my feet.

Close enough for horseshoes and hangernades.

A bit higher could have put out an eye.

I never would have guessed it could happen.

Easton 2117s 30".
125 gr target heads.

Would have been a hard hit for sure.
