Default Morels

Picked a cap full this afternoon right on trail, did not look off the trail because
lots of small ones, about size of pinky finger. Will go back in 2-3 days.

What part of the province? I usually expect them a bit later near Calgary.

I wouldn't wait 2 or 3 days. I'd wait a day.

So nice to see!

One thing that makes me jealous of central/northern Alberta.

Your morel season starts a week or two ahead of the Calgary area.

Perfect timing for rain this year here, and with a warm forecast the morels should be happily fruiting in numbers by the end of the month.

A friend only found verpas today too, W edge of Edmonton/St. Albert.

Remember the food safety tips about Verpas. They should be parboiled in a well ventilated area to release the toxic gas Gyromitrin-like toxin. After parboiling they are generally safe for most people. Sensitive folks will experience gastrointestinal upset and can have loss of muscular coordination. Don't eat too many the first time. Don't eat verpas daily over a few days.

Typical verpa,
Caps are good, smoky flavour.
I wouldn't touch the stems tho, the web in the stems has a mild toxin.

I didn't take any photos of the Verpas as I wasn't interested in keeping them.

What sort of habitat do people usually find Black Morels? I know they are often in recent burn areas, but Internet also says coniferous forests. I remember finding them in mixed birch and aspen stands in my youth, but maybe I have it all wrong.

Lots of times where I find verpas a couple days later I find morels in the same area.

The last real big haul of Black Morels that I had, was the spring after a severe forest fire started near Saskatchewan River Crossing in Banff National Park, and crossed onto provincial lands along Highway 11. On the provincial side of the boundary (picking shrooms in the national parks is prohibited), along the north side of the highway, on the south facing slope, amongst the charred forest of lodgepole pines, after a hard rain, in the first week of June, it was almost a lawn of black morels.

I haven't found them there since - but those are the conditions that worked for me!
There you go Erik !

Can be a bit tough to tell the diff too.
These from our area near Valleyview yesterday.
Verpas on the right, morels on the left.

Thanks. That confirmed one angle.

I am still left with the question of whether anyone finds black models in stands of conifers that have not undergone a burn?

Default Mushrooms

We picked 4 large bags of morels this past weekend. Had a great feed of them with our steaks. We found the best day was Saturday as the winds seemed to really dry out the bush, and we hardly found any Monday

I picked about half an ice-cream pail worth of Black Morels yesterday.

They are just starting here. I've been checking every couple of days for most of the month. Yesterdays pick was the first I've found.

Found a half a bucket full today too. Was trying to decide if they are just starting or just finishing. Out in a couple days again. Wizard/Pigeon area.

We are on the backside of the first bloom here. Picked a couple gallons 2 nights ago but the shrooms in the open are drying up. If we get another rain shower should bring on a few more. GP area.

I've noticed some fungi in my ditch on our driveway for several years now.
Determined that they are the morels you guys are picking.
Well I've got about 2 doz good now and I think I'll pick em tommorro or next day. They look as big as they will get.
What am I doing with them?? Wash and fry in butter ?
Yes I know there is all sorts of info all over the Google but it's more fun to ask you folks.
You wouldn't just sit down and eat a big bowl of mushrooms would you.
On a steak or what.
Thanks.. I'm hoping they are good !
Btw these are in DeWinton

Not really sure where I'd even start looking for wild mushrooms. I hike woodland trails regularly and never see any fungi that look edible.

How do you guys even tell what's what?

Cast iron pan over a fire in butter with salt and a little oyster sauce can’t be beat! We went through some old fire burns last year in BC and cleaned up
