Default Lyman 25x Scope

Have a line on a Lyman 25x LWBR. Would this be a good choice for my Sako Varmint in .222 for benchrest shooting?

Back in the day they had a good following. Don't see many now, but if the price is right should be decent. Not sure who is still servicing them but if need be you might find someone.

I would stick with the Weaver T series or B&L scopes....maybe even a leupold.

I want to be in the $500-$600 range. What would be my best choice for bench rest shooting less than 300 yds. Fixed power I'm assuming? What power? Any ideas? Thanks.

The Lyman 25 was an optically good scope which seemed to have occasional mechanical difficulties. A Leupold 24 of the same vintage is a far better scope. I competed for several years with both and preferred the Leupold by a wide margin.
For serious BR shooting, power in the 36X range and higher is preferred but a person can still do good work with a 24X if his eyes are sharp. Leeper

Weaver 36X is by far the best bargain in its performance range. In my opinion it is much superior to the discontinued Leupold 36 BR. You can buy them new in your price range.

I e-mailed Jerry and he says he doesn't do them anymore due to "the scopes have to be sent to the US for warranty and I have no way to support the product - there may be issues with export/ reimport." And suggests Sightron instead.

Post #9. Joe at RPS Int. has Weaver 36X on his stock list. In the years I used the Weaver 36X scopes I never had a problem. Weaver probably shut Mystic out for not carrying stock.

Would you pick a Weaver over a Sightron? Also, is 36x too much for 100 yds or should I look at 24x or similar?

Have no experience with the 36X Sightron, but I have several Sightron SIII's variables and they seem to work okay. For 100 yd shooting the 24X will show bullet holes, but it won't at 200 yds. The Sightron SIII 6-24 LRMOA has 100 MOA vertical and is a good choice for most shooting from 100 yds to one mile. ($1000.00 price range)

I still have no problem picking out bullet holes at 200 with a Leupold 24; as long as said holes are not in the black. I can also see OK through a 6-24 Weaver I have. I have looked at some Sightron scopes and they look OK but I have not used one. Leeper

The price of the Weaver appeals to me. I'm just not sure on 24x or 36x. I'm from a small town to scope selection is very minimal so I don't really have the opportunity to try before I buy. I'm looking for as much opinions and help as possible. Thanks guys.

For a serious short range BR rifle, I would be inclined to go with the 36. For use at longer ranges or for "F" class, I would lean toward the 24X. The main thing I like about a 24 over a 36 is the greater depth of field which enables me to see and read mirage better. The trade-off is that definition is not as good. It is a little more difficult to hold as precisely with a 24 as with a 36. Neither one is particularily good for field use but the 24 is better. In truth, if one wants to use the rifle for varmints as well as target, that is where the variable comes into it's own and a 6-24X will be very useful. Leeper

The gun will be a dedicated bench rest gun shooting under 300yds. So Weaver or Sightron? Lol

The new sightrons are amazing. Hence the price. The older models were not so good.

A couple years ago I had a disastrous brain fart and posted for sale four 36X Weavers, B&L 36X, Leupold 24X, and a Leupold 45X. They sold in about five minutes. I miss the Weavers, they were great for load development work. The Leupold 24X was a POS. Never could get sight picture and target dot on the same plane, and the 45X Leupold crosshair was canted to turrets. I suggest you buy the Weaver 36X!

Not sure. Never used a weaver. I have always wanted to pick up a used one but guys either want more than new price or they have already been sold before I can grab them.

Bought a Bausch and Lomb 36x and we will see how that goes. I'd like to get a Nightforce but going to have to save up.
