Now, that's pretty cool! I would never have expected that someone would see turkeys in that area.

Two years ago I was driving from drayton valley to rockymountain house the
bently way about 4:30 am mid summer just a little light out and I drove past about 6 black turkeys on the shoulder of the road and there was a long stretch between farms that I could tell and it left me puzzled

please do not take this as an insult !!! I have no Idea as to your back ground so this is not an atempt at anything negative but although I see no similarity I have heard people call sand hill cranes wild turkeys. With that said I have seen a flock of Wild Turkeys east of Camrose by Sedgewick about 8 years back. I see them down here at Pincher all the time but have never seen a flock over maybe 20 + or - And I have seen lots of Sandhill Cranes around Gull/Bentley over ths years.

Sandhills are big enough that a person can mistake them for DEER if driving by and just catching a glimpse!
One of the teamsters at work a few years ago said he saw some turkeys on the south dyke at Syncrude, then argued with me when I told them him they were Sandhill cranes!:confused
I'd seen them that morning and , yup, sandhills!
However, I would not be surprised if there were Mariams as far north as Bentley, stranger things have happened....

I'm one of these guys.
We were headin' up to Canoe lake last year and saw 6.Didn't know what they were until lately here.
As far as the wild Turkeys,I've seen a few around the Stettler area, actually South of Erskine.

I remember hearing about several release sites back in the late 70s, along the foothills and Rockies as far north as Hinton and Grande Cache. Another comment I recall was that there were other attempts to establish populations north of Edmonton.

We had someone do a private release around here once. Fish and Feathers had a conniption till they were all accounted for and the guy was fined severely. I guess one test would have been to walk towards them. If they flew off, wild turkeys, if not, probably one of the domestic breeds.

In the 1970s the Alberta government let 22 birds loose around the Porcupine Hills and others in the Cypress Hills. It’s estimated that there are now about 2,500 turkeys in the wild in Alberta. Personally I have seen one southwest of Longview and they have been spotted on the south end of Calgary.
