I have never seen official stats but the Alberta Angler of the Year competition used to say what % of the record length the winning entry was. Using that I came to the conclusion it was only a 45.5 inch fish.

It must have been a ridiculously fat fish to weigh 38 lbs. Most chunky 48-50 inch fish are just over 30 lbs.

That would be my conclusion if that is the case.

I have weighed several pike in the 40 - 46 inch range over the years with a certified boga and the heaviest have been in the mid 20 lb range.

This length to weight ratio from IN-Fisherman pretty much mirrors my experiences when we weigh pike.

My PB pike was 46" and 27 lbs. If that pike was 38 lbs it must have been either a blob or 49-50" or someone is exaggerating again.

All comes down to girth. My personal best was 46 long and 34 pounds this season my biggest was a 45 incher that only weighed 28

A pikes weight can vary significantly through the season,,, over 40 inch pike taken right after spawning in the spring are often 2 - 3 lb lighter than the same pike taken in September.

Of course there is the issue of fork length vs total length (pinched tail),,, most scientific studies use fork length measurements. Pike do not have a particularly deep fork but squeezing the pike tail can add over an inch to a fork length measurement. On a apples to apples measurement comparison, one inch difference can easily be 1 1/2 - 2 lb difference in weight on larger pike.

Wayne, were your fish fork length or total length measurements?

And then there is always the issue of weighing two fish in one. It is not uncommon for big pike to have a freshly swallowed undigested 2 lb plus smaller fish inside its gut and still grab onto a lure!

That fish`s girth and weight is going to be significantly more than if you catch it on an empty stomach!!!

Provincial record caught 1983. David Anderson 48 inches long. 38 lbs. I seen the article way back then and fish picture. It was a fatty and officially weighed in Lethbridge. Andrew Lake previously held the record at 37.5

48 inches would make more sense, a 45.5 inch 38 lb pike would be ridiculous. I would love to see a picture or article with more details but have never had luck finding that info.

For an idea this is what a 49 inch 33 lb 2 oz pike looks like.

Three years ago I caught two bona fide 44" female pike in the same spot within 10 minutes of each other. The first was a very tough-fighting 24 pounder with a deep gut. The second was a skinny rail, but feisty 17 pounder. A number of years before that, we witnessed the catching of a 52" pike that was big and deep, and weighed in at 33 pounds. I have to believe that a 38 pounder had to be a minimum of 52 inches longer, and possibly closer to 54".

Both weighed. My 34 was the same size as a buddies which was weighed with witnesses. The 45 incher I weighed.

Pikebreath is right. 2-3lb whiteish in the belly can help. Seems a pre spawn pike with a belly full of eggs would add to the fish weight as well. Post spawn they are always skinnier.

Default Mm big pike

My friend caught a 42.5" pike which weighed 27.5lbs at a reservoir derby and it was officially weighed, funny thing is that it only took 2nd place.
F&W also had a biologist on the lake who took the part of the jaw, it came back that pike was only 12.5yrs old.
Mine last year was just about 45" and 30lbs.
Based on that growth rate (2.2lbs/yr) another 4-5 years and it could have been a new record. Makes one think how many record pike are out there.

My largest pile was 44” caught opening day on my fly rod. Catch and release, no scale but I guessed it was 25ish pounds.

no. I don't pinch the tail or run my tape measure over the curve to get more length. I'll send you a pic when I find the stupid toggle to upload pics to my laptop.

at the rod trade lake, myself and several other fisherfolk watched a HUGE gal mosey along, easily 50+. we all started chucking lures in front of her, zero interest,,, a 5 pound lure might have enticed but stupid 5 inch meals wasn't her thing.

My PB was exactly 50" and weighed 35lb 4oz. Released successfully. I believe I caught the same fish 2 years in a row in the same spot.

Like the fella said. Girth is everything and gender second.

I've had 22" rainbows from the Shuswap that weight in the high 5lb pound range. 22" on the bow river commonly translates to 3 pound range. The Shuswap bows are regularly twice the diameter.

My son's 42" NP from last winter weighed just shy of 24lbs. It's back was 8" across with a great gut. In comparison my best was a 27lber from Keho that was over 46" it was a sleek beast compared to my boy's slug.
