I was wondering what I have to do to be allowed to remove road kill from Hwys. Locate to my favorite coyote spot.

Technically you are supposed to get a "found dead wildlife permit" from DNR.

my understanding is that you may take it BUT you must then go and get a permit at the soonest convenience, same as if you picked up a owl, hawk etc. i passed on a freshly killed great grey this year because i was unsure of the rule, after being enlightened by a CO,i went back to get it but alas it was gone.

Call Volker Stevin ,they would probably be happy to have you dispose of it for them.

Default Just Did This

Call F & W and let them know what you want to do. When they give permission, go and pick up the deceased and take it to the F & W office to obtain a permit. Make sure you have a very specific location, use GPS app on phone, and know the surroundings of where you got it. There is a cost, but it is minimal.

Hope this helps.

Call fish and wildlife and they will issue you an occurance number. No permit required. Whenever you find something just call in the occurance number with location found and area you are bringing it too. I always just call after hours and leave a message. I've never been turned down.

There's no cost for the permit to salvage a roadkill deer or moose, it's free. You might be thinking about a permit to keep things like dead owls, a found dead skull with antlers, etc.

You call F&W and give them the location, species, sex, etc as well as your info and they mail you a permit to have the roadkill. They ask you the reason to salvage it.......ie. dogfood, personal consumption, etc. You have to take the whole animal, guts and all.

If F&W is closed you are legal to take the roadkill but you have to report it as soon as they open and you might have to drive to their office with the dead animal.

^^^^^ that's what I was thinking. Thanks for clearing it up. You can also call report a poacher and start the salvage file and you will be good to go. I just went through this with a buck I found two weeks ago.

Not sure about trappers but a wolf outfitter I know has a permit to collect road kill but it has to be used in the same WMU it was found. In other words, he can't take it from one WMU and use it in another. CWD issue?
