Need help with arrow selection on new bow
This new to me bow I've purchased is a carbon icon 60 lb draw, I've been measured at 28.5".
I've been thinking of using rage or grim reaper broad heads 100 gr
But am totally lost on what the arrow length and what grain of arrows to buy.
Let alone brand. Any help would be great as I wanna start practicing asap so I'm ready for hunting season.
( FYI I've hardly shot many bows ) just getting into the archery side of things)
I've got 3 beemans to shoot in 400 gr- to get use to bow.
But wanna sight in bow with arrows I'm gonna actually be hunting with.

If I was you, I would suggest taking your bow and going to jimbows and picking up some victory VAP's. Carson will set you up with proper length and spine.

X2 on jimbows and the VAPs
Not so much on the broadheads. Mechanicals lose a lot of energy on opening and with any 60 lb bow, you don't have a lot to spare...and that's without factoring the inevitable Murphys law-moments that go along with adding moving parts to anything. Highly recommend you pick out a quality fixed blade. Mechanicals are not a substitute for proper tuning (if you are new, let jimbows handle the tuning as well)
(Insert leftycanuck comment about grim reapers with picture of dead elk)

Lol, I have blown clean through elk at 35 yards with a 60lbs bow (Destroyer 350). As long as you have 60-65KE minimum...certain mechanicals will do the job.

I am definitely going to Jimbows
I have been there already and got my bow tuned they're great guys and showed me a few good arrows. I've had my eye on those gold tips. Guys like them?
What is the rule of thumb for arrow length regarding draw length and where do you measure from?

Gold tips are good stuff. Tough and mine fly great. The 2 most successful archers I know shoot mechanicals. It's all preference.

Honestly I don't think it's gonna be too crazy using mechanicals for a 60 lb imo
It's the same as rifle with shot placement. But I think you guys are right, be careful on how much resistance of a broad head to use.
It almost looks like the reaper/ rage heads have similar restrictive values.
Rage- 2 blades bigger opening
Reaper- smaller blades but 3

Elk on one lung- 20 miles of green, rose bush and deadfall infested hell.
Don't mind me giving lefty a hard time, he knows it's all in good fun. Use what you like just be aware of the limitations.

I just picked up new bow myself. Not only bow but rest, sight, and arrows as well. The only thing I'm bringing over will be my release.
I have been using the Grim Reapers as well. I am going to look for Grim Reaper broad heads this year before season starts. I'm hoping that they fly as well as the Grim Reapers do. Just have to test them out.
As far as the arrow length goes, take your bow in with you to JimBows. They will get your arrows cut down to the right length for you. The broad head should be just in front of the riser so when you let the arrow go it doesn't get in to your lead hand.
For grains, my total weight las year was between 400 and 425 grains. I haven't measured my current arrows. My scale is packed up and I'm happy with how the bow shoots. It'll be time to get out the chrono and scale soon though.

I know shoot a 63lb draw with a 29 1/2" draw. My arrows I believe are 29 3/4" string to front of arrow, plus whatever broad head length I decide to shoot.

So
I picked up Easton deep six arrows (400), with deep six reaper broad heads (100)
Everything on sale 6x arrows for 50 bucks, and the reapers 4 pack 27 bucks
Good deal in my mind. Also shot this weekend, shoots great!
If anyone else has the same bow setup ide love to hear what you shoot.

Im gonna play devil's advocate here and recommend that you may wait til next season, not this coming one before hunting with the bow. It takes more than 2 months to become proficient enough with a bow to be sure you will make a clean ethical kill.

You can make that recommendation without knowing anything about the guy?
for example his....
- hunting experience other than bow hunting
- physical condition
- dedication and available time to practice
- natural ability
- and the big one "ethics"
I use Gold Tip Hunter XT's. Not the cheapest but also not the most expensive. Great reputation for toughness. Several people have recommended Jimbow's and I believe they carry Gold Tips.
Good luck with your search and the up coming season.

Goldtip Hunter XT are very durable, I have shot 2 mule deer, 1 elk and 1 coyote with the exact same arrow (inspected after each kill and new broad head each time) and it's still the first arrow in my quiver.

I too use gold tip xt hunters for killing stuff other than foam, except when I compete in the ABA Hunter Shoot I use them there too. I have for the last 10 or so years and they have never left me wanting more arrow on everything from coyotes to moose and elk and bears.

Thanks for all the replies guys.
Yeah seeing that these arrows I've bought are more than likely discontinued, I may or may not sight in with another brand closer to hunting season. Ie gold tips, they have great reveiws.
I've been hunting many years, not that it should matter. But yes ethics are important to me, and my groupings at 60 yards better be deadly come hunting season or there's won't be a bow season.
There should be no problem although, more than enough time.
Archery is coming pretty natural to me already. Dead on @ 40 haven't even jumped to 50/60.
Pretty much if I guy sets a stand even at 20 to a trail he would be fine.
Everyone has a learning curve, and needs to stay within they're comfort zone.
Agreed

Great thread. I bought a used Elite Answer a few weeks ago. It came fully set up with Victory Vaps and Grim Reaper broad heads. Only thing is it has the peepless sight. Which I'm not sure about. I'm heading up to Jimbows in Calgary next Monday to get them to go over it with me and make whatever changes I need. Been out shooting it almost every day and it's fun as hell.
But being a newbie definetly want some experts to make sure the draw length is right. Maybe need new arrows, put in a peep and whatever else they recommend. Good to confirm they are the guys to go to.

I'm shooting at 65 pounds. 27.5 inch draw length. I shoot carbon express maxima hunters 350s with 100 grain grim reapers broad heads. Blew through both shoulders of a big Mule last fall. 30 yards.
