338-06 recoil???
Got my eye on a two really nice rifles. They are the same model. One is chambered in 338-06 and the other is in 275 Rigby. If I am to buy one or the other, it will be my go-to rifle. Like most of you, I mostly hunt deer, but every few years I have a moose or elk tag.
What is the 338-06 recoil comparable to? I am not recoil shy per se, but I am also not gonna be running out and buying some sort of ultra mag either.
Any help would be appreciated.

I was a bit surprised at how much recoil its got especially with the heavier bullets, don't know what to compare it to.

My Sako m75ss 270wsm with 140gr ABs has "more felt recoil" than my Sako m75 Greywolf 338-06AI with 225gr ABs. Buy the 338-06 and be very happy.

Felt recoil is a combination of weight of the rifle, bullet, load, the type of recoil pad and stock design
Here's a calculator
http://www.handloads.com/calc/recoil.asp
A 338-06 would be close to a 30-06 with heavy bullets

I'd pass on the 275 Rigby and go for the 7mm Spainish Mauser

Lots of factors come into play with recoil. But as far as I'm concerned any cartridge based off a 3006 isn't going to kick very hard

Theoretically, I agree. From experience I disagree. I had a M77 Ruger in 35 Whelan that kicked like a mule with heavy loads. Main reasons being it was a lighter weight rifle, and it had a hockey puck for a recoil pad. It was tolerable off hand, but beat me up on the bench. A Simms recoil pad made it a lot nicer to shoot.

I was very pleasantly surprised with how much less my 338-06 kicked vs my 338win mag (not that a 338 is terrible either). When I had mine the 338win mag never went hunting again.
That said, if it's to be your "go to" I think I would lean towards the 7x57 or better yet a 280 or 7rem mag.

Quick comparo: according to the article posted by Chico, all other factors being equal the 338-06 with kick less than a 300 win mag. And about half as much as the 45-70 +p loads. Then again comparing a 45-70's recoil to either of those two is like comparing them to a 12 gauge. The recoil pulse is longer but it is still there. A friend's bar in .300 win mag feels about the same as his bolt .243. In fact the .243 has more perceived recoil in my experience - not because it kicks harder, but because it kicks sharper - if that makes sense. Also slower powders and heavier bullets will spread out the pulse as well.
All other factors being equal.

338-06
Got 2 in this caliber. Standard weight rifles. With max charges the recoil is similar to the 7mm rem mag and 30-06. A little less than my 300 H&H so not bad at all. Cheap to reload...brass is free...plenty of once fired at busier ranges...And lots for bullet selection...Dont need to buy premium bullets at the slower non magnum velocities..200gr's at 2773 fps makes a decent impression!

You need to keep an ear to the ground for such news. The AI version is old news. Retro is in.

There was no choice between old and new. I likely would have chosen AI anyhow.
As far as retro goes, I'm all for retro. I have no problem wearing black dress socks and loafers to cut the grass or work in the garage.
My kids have a problem with it though
