Default 300 savage

After reading about cat taking his deer with a 303, I got a bit nostalgic and started thinking about my 300 savage in savage 99.
I haven't used it for many years.
Would like to take a deer with it again
Question I read an article in Petersens Hunting about the 300 savage by Chuck (now I forgot his last name),I think it was in 2003.
Interesting article about history and also reloading.
Wondering if anyone can find it, can't find it online.
If anyone has it, please let me know, would love to read it again. Thanks.

That is one cartridge I have never hunted with or even loaded for, although I do know it is a very good round and was used as basis for the 308 Winchester.

Used 1 for 2 out of the 3 last hunting seasons. Took a mule deer buck 2 years ago and a whitetail this season. Nice effective round. Reload for it because it can sometimes be hard to find factory ammo for it.

The Son In-Law has used a .300 Savage to take a few deer.
150 grain reloads, with Varget, and no complaints.

Default Savage 99's

The four I've owned were all capable of 1" at 100 yards.Reloading the .300 Savage is straight forward .For the 150gr bullet 42gr-Win 748........165gr bullet 41gr-Win 748 and the 180gr bullet 40gr-Win 748 all with magnum primers as this is a ball powder. The forend can be tuned for accuracy by either a blob of glass bedding at the tip[the last inch] or by inserting a flap off an ammo box the correct size in the bedding channel or cut an old credit card as a shim..Then play with the tightness by adjusting the forend screw. The Savage 99 should be a 1-12" twist.
