.177 Air Rifle effectiveness

How far have you killed small game such as Magpies and Crows with a .177 air rifle with a MV of 500 fps?

With headshots on crows 20-25 yards ......bodyshots on magpies.Harold

Haveing used one extensivly I would say that you have with the best shot and most effective pellet you can do 30yrds though its a big gamble. The pellets will make a big diffrence the hollow pointed crossmans looked great but i found them lacking. The simple round nosed ones where my favourite as the expansion is negligable no matter what you use. But play around and find the best for your gun. Furred animals are definetly a problem the 177 does not deform enough if its not a head shot. One i shot had a missed pellet almost coming put its back. Fully healed over and not deformed in the least

Furthest....blackbird around 50 yards, witnessed by my grandpa. I was about 12 years old and it was a one shot kill, right in the head, he couldn't believe it. Still remember the look on his face over 20 years later. Regularly hit everything at 30 yards but that was when I would spend every evening and all weekend shooting gophers, ran through a 500 tin of pellets every week or two, and didn't much care how far anything went after I shot it. Pest control.

Crossman co2 powered rifle, started with open sights and eventually got a cheap bushnell scope. Best thing a kid could own.

I have a .177 rifle which I use for grouse in the fall. A head or neck shot is very effective. Body shots are only effective if you break a wing from my experience. I just purchased a Crossman P1322 in .22 ga. late last fall. I have not tried it out on game yet but it goes right thru a piece of 1/2 in. cedar where as the 177 appears to go just past 1/2 way. I used 10 pumps for both tests and both pellets were 14.3 grains. I would think that the .22 would at least show the bird going down most times where as you may have killed your magpie or crow with e 177 but it flew away before expiring.
