Default Sick Rainbows around Grande Cache

Fished Pierre Grey's Lake's the last couple of weekends and have noticed a lot of pale looking faded rainbows. The last one I caught had a lot of red bubbly crap around the anal vent, pretty disgusting ! They all put up a decent healthy fight they just looked like crap. I also hit another lake just outside of Grande Cache and noticed a few sickly looking trout as well. Anyone know of anything getting passed around either from bad stock or some sort of evasive species ? I didn't keep anything and didn't touch any of the fish, just released them with pliers in the net.

That sucks to hear. I am planning a trip up there for a week of camping next week. Hopefully it's nothing major. Did you fish any of the rivers?

Matt

Could this not be because the are POST-SPAWN fish?

I've caught post spawn before and they were almost black. All the lakes around here are stocked with triploids . I have noticed the odd male in full spawning color though.

Sounds like a late spawn rainbow to me. They look like hell for a couple weeks but they recover quickly for a fairly fragile fish.

Triploids don't spawn . I've caught post spawn trout before and their bellies were black . These weren't like that .

They still inhibit the behaviour.

Maybe that's it, we'll see in a couple of weeks . I know I hit a brookie lake in November last year through the ice and didn't see any spawning behavior in the usual spots.

Male triploids still color up and change behaviors. As well, making triploids is not a 100% process...a certain number could still be diploid.
If all the fish you see that look poor are males, that could be the answer.
Hopefully not a disease agent in your fishing spot
