Default WMU 402 - Impressions?

With my season all but complete, I was interested in getting feedback on 402. This was the first year under the new Livingstone-Porcupine Recreation Plan, and while there are threads going on at length about Porcupine, I haven't read anything about 402 (Livingstone).

I spent 7 full hunting days out there this season, and was fortunate enough to harvest a 5x5 elk in late September. I probably saw more deer this year than I typically have in the past as well, although I did not get a good chance to harvest a whitetail.

That said, I found the unit to be far less busy than years past. Way fewer camps, less road traffic, little interaction with other hunters, and very quiet (little to no OHV presence). I believe the restrictions on OHV use has reduced the number of hunters here - folks who won't (or can't) hike the hills and have gone elsewhere. This reduced presence and pressure appears to have made game move in areas they previously had vacated.

How have other's experiences been?

Well it won’t get any better by posting about it..

OHV must stick to the designated trails. ^^

About 95% of the trails have been closed.

I have noticed that as well. Generally there always were hunters camped at the Atlas staging area. This year later on I have not seen any. Many of these hunters did not have quads but hunted the area.
Conversely driving from Lundbreck to Longview on November 12 ( a holiday for some) I have never seen so many hunters parked along the highway.
I wonder if people feel that the predators, lack of grass and other conditions have chased lots of game to the foothills and that is where you have to hunt. As they close more and more use in the Castle zone 400 I was wondering if 402 would be hit harder. But it appears the foothills are the place of choice. I feel for the ranchers just more grief for them. They know who to thank.

Spent the last 5 days in 402 in and around Dutch Creek/Racehorse/Oldman looking for moose. Very little action with quads or SxS mostly road hunters. F&W officer that stopped us told us they weren’t enforcing any of the trail closures until Nov 30. Conservation officer that stopped us told us they were enforcing the closures now. Who do you believe? Very frustrating.

I hope guys are telling all these conservative candidates that we want to go back to the original south saskatchewan plan which was bad enough. Time for outdoor people to get their say not just one user group.

Links below will describe. Fish & Wildlife was a very nice fella even gave us a lead on a moose. Conservation officer just wanted to read out his list of rules...

Aha! What is described as a F&W is actually what I’ve known as a CO....probably a throwback to my SK roots.

Thanks
