Scenars for hunting
Has anyone used these for game? I’ve been shooting them in a 6.5 lately and they are harder on AR 500 steel than any bullet I have ever used. They leave a mark. :-)

I’ve killed elk, bear and deer with the 155 from a .30-06 and the only hesitation I would have is on steeply angled shots on larger animals if the impact velocity will be high.

I keep my Scenars , Bergers and Match Kings on the range and use bullets designed for hunting to kill my big game animals , I know lots of people who use match Bullets for hunting.

I shot a dozen or so goats with them, in my .260, 136gr I think, only ammo i had in the vehicle, after a deer stalkers target shoot,
I would use the word unpredictable, one would pencil straight threw, next animal shot, blow half the far shoulder off,

Just went and looked, no 136 ge so either its 123 or 139gr Lapua scenars, pretty sure i would have had 123gr, as my .260 has a small mag box, (Kimber) and my main hunting bullet is the 125gr partion,

I believe they would be unpredictable. I’m shooting the 123’s as well and by all indications they are a hard bullet.

Never tried it.
Anything I’ve read is exactly as described here = unpredictable.
Explode, or “works like a Berger”, or pencil through (which all the might be descriptive of “work like a Berger” lol)
For that reason I steered clear.
It seems there’s a bit of a cult following using the 155 (?) scenar in 308 for hunting at all sorts of ranges but I’m not about to try it

I used them for coyotes in a .223. Everyone I killed was a pencil hole in and out.

A group of guys in Montana- one in particular, who I’m sure you’re familiar with - have piled up hundreds of animals with the Scenars. I have a box of 139s here to try eventually.

You can find a cult that wants to believe just about anything. I believe I know of the guy you are hinting at. He and his followers go out of their way to prove their point.
Why even try a target bullet when there are so many purpose built hunting bullets that are both accurate AND boringly reliable?

Is there a certain number of successful, clean harvests that would change your opinion? 100 head? 200, or more? Seems like the data would either support their case at some point, or do they just remain 'cult members'?
Guy's projectile selection parameters and requirements vary. That's why.

You have no idea who he is talking about and that does not describe him at all.

Really?
Handloads? Ive never saw someone do that before. Most of my friends dont reload so. If I saw one of my friends using match bullets, Id totally call him out.
Ive always used Sierra MatchKings on the range and Game king to hunt
With my newest it prefers Hornady ELDM on the range and ELDX to hunt.
Kinda unethical to use match bullets IMHO

You don't use Ford parts to fix a Chevy?
So why would you use a target bullets on game?

Match bullets are designed to resist deformation and maximize accuracy
Hunting bullets are designed to deform and maximize shock transference.
Now apply common sense and personal ethics to the above and decide which kind of projectile to use for what you intend to do with it!

I know A-max bullets work well in a .22-250 on coyotes, same thing right?
