First off, Yes, this belongs in the Hunting forum!

And yes, those are oysters.

Nope, not too early, but this is just the start.

Those same logs will probably produce more in the coming weeks.

Yes,, and those are nice.
In early July they brown / dry up, or the small white worms get them.
So the last 2 weeks of June is the time.

In the foothills, late June is just the very beginning of oyster season.
The Central region is often 2-3 weeks earlier for spring mushrooms than in the south or west.

Eastern foothllls, edge of the prairie, Late June early July.
Mid to west foothills, early to mid July.

Hint.

Found this and another bunch late last week. I had never picked Oyster mushrooms before so by the time I was confident on identification, I went back and the worms had gotten to them. Hoping more will pop up in the same area.

Beautiful!

If a bit wormy...

Take them home.
Pull them into 1/4" strips lengthwise, from the outer edge to the base.
Place them on a cookiesheet in the sun or oven on very low ( 80-90F), keep the door cracked open for air flow.

The worms will all crawl out.

Continue to dry them thoroughly if you want to save them for later.

Ram, now you know what to look for.
Dead mature Aspen that still has the bark, standing or on the ground.
Oysters tend to grow near the ground first then higher up on the standing trees.
It's a temperature thing...

You can take an oyster log home and grow them there too.
You might get 'shrooms for two or three years.

Awesome, Thanks WalkingBuffalo! I will be sure to post if I find more, now that I know what to do with them.

Well that didn’t take long. Driving onto a Pad at work and there’s a bunch right beside the road.

I had no idea these were edible, I walked by a bunch the other day setting up trail cameras. Are there other mushrooms that look similar that are toxic or are these sort of the only ones out there that look like this?

I'm in the same boat - find lots (more accurate see lots don't look for them) but don't know what's good and what's not so just keep walking.

Found some yesterday near the Caroline Gas Plant, but already too late after the last rain, turning brown and full of maggots, 90% of my harvest wasn't good
managed to slavage a few and gave them the salt water treatment

these are way too old

these are a little better

You'll have to get them one or two days after the rain if you can... well , maybe next time!

Hey Bob, they are just starting now. With the rain you could still collect them in mid-July

Was out there by the James River this morning. They are starting to show on logs and standing dead aspen poplars. 30% have maggots already. With moisture and heat the season is just starting

Sometimes high up, my mushroom spade is pretty handy!

and my dog also found something in his domain

Found aprx 2 lb of oysters this weekend up near Valleyview.
Only 2-3 small white worms / maggots and a few small black bugs, Beatles maybe.
Easy to clean the off.
