Default Jim Shockey Uncharted Yukon

Been watching this show the last few weeks haven't followed Jim Shockey in years, but I like it as far as it's from the guides point of view, was watching the episode last night where they shot the bull moose out of the boat that was moving. I know that's illegal in most places anyone know if it is in the Yukon?.

I like most of the Jim Shockey episodes on his hunts. It would be hard to believe shooting from boat illegal in Yukon and he would produce this in a show.

Yes that's what I thought I know in Alberta you have to be underhand power and all momentum of the boat has to be stopped

Incorrect. You’re good in a muscular powered boat to be moving.

have a loaded firearm (live ammunition in breech, chamber or magazine) in or on, or discharge a weapon from
a boat unless the boat is propelled by muscular power or is at anchor and the person is hunting, or
any kind of aircraft or vehicle whether it is moving or stationary.

The short answer according to the Yukon regulations is that it is NOT illegal to shoot out of a boat, about page #26 of the regulations, google is your friend.

He should have been taken to task over another episode where they stopped at a memorial on a gravel bar to honour a late friend who drowned on that river. Boat was onshore and they did not appear to be setting up camp yet Steve and the guys are on camera drinking Jack Daniels straight from the bottle. Not a good image, especially considering his young son was in the boat with them.

You can shoot from a boat but the engine I believe has to be off. When I guided in norther BC we would drive right to the moose on the shore and then have the hunter ready to shoot then right when we got close enough, the engine goes off and the guy takes the shot. Take the shot before the waves catch up.

The Yukon Hunting/Wildlife act specifically states that a boat is not classed as a vehicle. Shooting from a vehicle is a no go up here. Boats are fair game. Nothing to do with propulsion.

Honestly, the moose react as soon as you alter the speed of an engine. If you keep your outboard at a steady engine speed then you tend to get right up to the darn thing. They treat it as white noise. As soon as you stop your outboard or in some way alter its sound (ie. find neutral) then the critters tend to be wise to you.

I have a vested interest in this topic as I have a water access cabin in the Yukon. It is moose central around my place ; )

well we all figure its a hunt and no guarantees,,,,
BUT for the 25K minimum opportunity's needs to be 98 % if your going that large in my opinion.
6k Alberta not as hard to swallow.

I didnt watch the episode so enlighten me, did they drink the whole bottle or just take a shot to honor their friend? If they just took a shot to honor their dead friend then knitting might be more your speed
