That's a tough one! I'm looking forward to some of the bird experts to weigh in.

If you had waited a few minutes I'm sure a parent would have been along shortly with some grub.

My first thoughts was that it is some type of blackbird, perhaps Brewer's Blackbird, but I have to agree that that is a tough one. What kind of habitat? How high is the nest off the ground? Were there any birds protesting while you photographed the nest? Any other info.....

I have been playing with the Smithsonian app after hearing about it on meateater. Real time analysis of birdsong. So cool. Each different type of hears, it adds to a list and each subsequent time one calls, it lights up on the list. Recordings of each birds various calls.

A parent bird fly by would be the best to ID.

Looking at the nest construction... depending on the nest location my first guess would be a wood thrush.

Depending on the size of nest, I'm going with Robins.
Likely would be a good idea to buy a paperback book called 'Birds of North America' and carry in in your vehicle. One with all the pictures in color.

I'll bet there's an APP for that. Point and shoot
