Biggest herring you can get. Biggest ones at TFH. I have caught tiny pike about 2lb and a lot of large ones on the ice including a pb on ice at pigeon, 37 inch about 20 lbs. most people that have seen the bait comment that I should keep the bait and eat it it’s so big. herring all the way.

Only the skin, fins, eyes, and dead eggs of game fish can be used as bait. I find that whole fish work far better than belly meat. If you're stuck on using belly meat, try using belly sucker meat.

Herring or sardines both work for me, the oilier the better. I have caught them on beef fat and gristle while targeting Ling as well.

The belly skin with the anal fin or fin from filet scraps is amazing imo. If the bite is slow, do a silence of the lambs and wrap the skin around a herring or larger smelt.

I’ve used moose tongue for burbs in the past, stays on the hook really well and they like it more the more tattered it gets. Heard moose fat works well too- gonna give it a try this week as I find myself with a ready supply!
