Unhappy I don't understand people... Happy ending

Well I thought I would have a go at trapping some minnows this year so I went and bought a trap and thought I would do a test yesterday. I set it under a bridge and left it over night , went back this morning to see if it worked. Abracadabra, it was gone! I guess someone needed it more than I did .

I guess in future I will go with the pop bottle trap ,at least it slightly cheaper if it goes missing.

River levels can change dramatically, specially if they have hydro electric installations. just swept away ?

Nope this was very small slow moving river ( Sturgeon coming out of Devils lake) and the trap was tied to shore

I have also had a few minnow traps go missing over the years, I now use 100 pound fluorocarbon line to try and hide the rope so people have a hard time seeing it, I have not lost one since getting ride of the rope, most people suck, it's sad to say but they do, sorry for your loss

Minnow traps, trail cams, tree stands..... that’s the way she goes nowadays...

I don’t understand people either. I’ve walked by many tree stands and trail cameras when I’ve been hunting, I don’t pay them any mind, just carry on my way. If it’s not mine I don’t mess with it, doesn’t even enter my mind. It still surprises me how many people, when they come across someone elses property have the need to steal it, or try to come up with an excuse to justify taking it.( still stealing). I guess it was how I was raised.

I'd NEVER steal it, but I can't ever resist 'making faces' at cameras - just like I do in "big box" stores or bars.........

Default Labeled ?

Just putting this out there.... did it have your name and win or licence number on it ? If I recall correctly, minnow traps are required to be labelled. Is it possible that a Conservation Officer picked it up if it wasn't yet labeled ?

yep I had my my name and fishing licence were printed on the inside ring of the trap in permanent marker. Checked the regs a few times to make sure I was not putting it where it shouldn't be as well

The way of the world.

I doubt there is anyone who hasn't had something stolen. Up until about 1980 you could leave anything in camp while hunting and expect it to be there when you got back after your day of hunting. Keys were left in vehicles and houses unlocked in rural Alberta until about the 90's.

Today if you want to keep something, you need to shove it up .....well you get the idea. And in some areas it wouldn't be safe there.

Speaking of traps. Are there crayfish around Alberta that you can trap and eat?

Maybe it was some nefarious ne'er do wells as you believe, but could it also be an animal (mink, bear, coyote, racoon, etc) that wanted the contents and dragged it off somewhere?

Well if it was a bear he was wearing work boots and could smell the trap submereged under water and could untie a knot that was tied to a post under the bridge on a gravel rd. I admire your faith in humanity though

But your had the same faith in humanity as you left it there. If I left anything out on public land or in public waters I wouldn’t expect it to be there in the morning. That’s just the world we live in.

Kinda figured as much ...but figured I'd hold out a little hope for humanity. That's too bad man, happened to me once at Gull lake. Too, I guess we just have to take the gamble sometimes and jus hope we don't get burned.

Yes. Just kill them all before transport. Lots in the nsr, Ssr, rdr, and many other water bodies. Crazy how they are all over now yet 30 years ago they were only in the beaver river in north eastern Alberta.

Yup... they're in Nose Creek in Calgary (trib to the Bow river)... makes me think a good imitation would catch some nice trout if fished right.

Angry

I have 'lost' 6 crab traps at Rupert. We actually watched 1 guy take 1. We were anchored, he whipped to the middle of the 3, grabbed it and was gone mach chicken.

That's $1000 for anyone counting. 6 rolls lead rope, 6 big traps, 6 bait cages, 6 floats, gst and pst.

Is it really. I guess if the bar keeps getting lower and lower. we'll see more and more of this stuff.
Why was it different years ago? what has changed?

I can remember not too many years ago (okay about 45!) when Kurt505 and 1899B were young whippersnappers , it was common place for us to leave our gear in our boats , tools , fishing rods , etc at the Snye and at the Horse Pasture
With complete confidence . The town was very small in those days However .
We left our cabin unlocked as well .

It’s ironic that you would mention times when you would leave doors unlocked. Our Gun Club has been broken into 3 times in the last 6 months. We are thinking of leaving everything unlocked to avoid the repairs to door jams, etc. There is nothing they can’t get into with a cordless grinder. Containers, trailers, whatever.
