Default Shooting from a vehicle

What was the original reason for making shooting from a vehicle illegal?

Along with safety issues it probably had something to do with giving animals a headstart.

And here I've always paid extra for dual purpose flip-up mirrors on my dodges. Guess they are single purpose now

There were too many heater fans being wrecked from brass going down the defroster.

Growing up I remember the old 4 door ford custom bouncing down some RA trail (pasture) with 2 22s on each side ready for gophers and the next volley of lead. Sitting in the back you had to give the person in the middle (my 10y/o little sister usually) a turn every once in a while. Everyone was taught safe gun handling though and always followed dads example which was treating guns with utmost respect..

My grandfathers old farm truck makes the nastiest rattle. Lose over every little bump. Found about 500 .22 casings behind his dash when we were doing a repair.

This EXACTLY why I cannot hunt anymore, I just can't drag the truck door to my blind due to physical toll it takes on me

I still shoot out the window gopher hunting. I see many others doing the same in the areas I gopher hunt. I think the law came into effect to stop people locking up the brakes and shooting off maintained roads at ungulates.

Regardless of why the law exists, we can't even legally target shoot off of the hood, or out of the bed of a pickup.

Ya, in or on a vehicle in any way is the rule.
Was picking up a cow elk in 310 many years ago when u had to sign in to the lease ranch.
After my kill, I got permission for the gate keys, all was good to pick up the elk.
Word was out an elk was down, a few other hunters offered to help etc.
Dragged the elk in halves down the slopes to the truck.
Fishn feathers also arrived when we were loading, they checked tag, license, and the also saw my rifle leaning up against my truck tire.
They asked to check it, it was empty, but if it had one round still in it....

Interesting question. I would assume the law was made to protect big game animals. I don't know if safety would have been the original reason, but you never know. I would assume if someone saw someone else shooting at a big game animal from their truck it would be frowned upon. But, you shoot out of your truck out in a pasture at a gopher, nobody would bat an eye. Does the law apply on private land???

Yes, it applies everywhere. One of my neighbours received a ticket last summer after the fish cops witnessed him shooting gophers on his land from inside his truck.

It does in Montana, you can shoot gophers out of your moving vehicle on private land if you so desire.

Doesn't Montana decoys or whoever make a lightweight truck door decoy? Same company that makes those elk, deer and moose photograph decoys.
They look just like a truck door but waaaay lighter. I just looked on the website and only passenger side is available. Drivers side is back ordered.
