We have been checking a few known spots for a couple of weeks. Last night we hit them again. My unintentional strategy is to circle to a few south facing greened up spots in the evening (I’m just to impatient to sit in one spot truth be told) hoping something will be feeding. On the circle back to the truck we decided to check a spot that I haven’t seen much black bear activity. Lots of Grizzly but that’s about it. However we had picked up an elk shed there a couple of weeks ago and thought we would try again to match that up.

As we crested the rise Tyler whispers “Dad, Dad” and points to this feeding bear. Off come the packs and we slowly work our way over the crest to get a clear shot. Tyler leading and me barking hushed directions behind him. The roll of the hill prevented anything prone so it was going to be a kneeling shot over his standing pack. Then he does something he has never done while hunting. He completely ignores my directions, quickly moves laterally 10 yds and while kneeling gets the rifle over the pack and promptly takes out the bears front left wheel. I’ve never seen a bear, after being hit stand up on two legs. This one did, turned a few circles that way and then down he went.

We got things taken care of and packs loaded and hiked out in the dark.

Thanks everyone. With his bear in the salt he and his buddies went to end game tonight while I drug my carcass around looking for Goliath. Never found him. :-)

That's awesome, I can only imagine the day my boy is old enough to shoot a bear.
