Smile River Boating - Edmonton

Hi there! My husband’s son is coming up from Newfoundland for the rest of the summer and he was hoping to go on some camping/riverboating adventures with him. We live near Redwater and normally just launch our boat in the North Sakatchewan river at the boat launch in Fort Sask and then head into the city For a day trip with our 4 year old but now that he’s planning over night trips, he’s wondering where to go. He’d still be leaving from the Fort but looking for a route to go, where there’s camping along the way. He thought he read somewhere that camping on crown land is no longer allowed. Can anyone provide some insight?

Upstream of Genesee Bridge a couple miles is an natural area along the north side of the river that you can camp on... Burtonsville. I believe you can camp on any of the islands on the north sask river too. Just secure your boat good at night because water levels fluctuate daily.

There are some nice sized islands past Devon that I have seen many people camp on. Goggle maps will be your friend on which island to pick

I too have been wanting to do some overnighters but as well have concerns of the river dropping overnight and finding my boat 20’ from water or something like that. I’m curious as to what guys with experience with there boat and camping have to say as well.
And yes, there are some nice sized islands west of Devon that people camp on.

The water doesn't fluctuate that much on the river in fair weather. It will raise and lower by a foot or so daily. All depends on how much electricity needs to be produced at the Bighorn and Brazeau dams. More electricity is produced on hot days because of all the air conditioners in use so the water may rise a bit more. Mountain snow pack run off in June and July can cause water levels to rise considerably.

Another thing to consider is if there is a heavy downpour somewhere upstream the river can rise quickly. During a full fledged flood the water can rise a foot every hour or two. And debris like logs start floating by.

For the most part an overnight or three on the river if the weather is settled is a wonderful getaway.
