He looked healthy in mid November and still not too bad early December. Whatever happened he certainly went downhill fast.
I've been watching for birds and even went for a couple of walks but no luck in finding anything yet. I don't think he would of gone too far looking at the last pic of him. This is in WMU 510 so I don't think cwd but you never know.

Got home from work and my brother was over for a visit. After a few drinks around the fire pit, nature called. Was 15 yards from the pit and havin a pee and something caught my eye. A matching set!

Sometimes when you feed the deer they will not live. If your feeding oats sometimes they will over eat and bloat and die. It also changes the enzymes in their stomach as well and can cause issues. Maybe your deer ate too much of the wrong stuff

I don't think this guy bloated by the looks of him. I'm feeding oats and alfalfa and have done so for at least the past 15 years. There is an alfalfa field across the road from me and an oat field 1/2 mile away which I know he was feeding in during October and November so I don't believe I changed his diet at all.

This deer was only 4 1/2 as I have pics and sheds from the previous 2 years. The only thing I noticed in pics is that he maybe had a problem with his jaw. His tongue was out of his mouth quite a lot when feeding and there is a lump on bottom side of his jaw.

A friend of mine watched a buck kill another buck in the third week of December. He was watching them fight out his window one evening, then seen the half eaten body of the loser the next morning next to a bale in the same field.

I seen another buck kill another buck on wild TV. a while ago. It pretty much stabbed his antlers into the other bucks boiler room.

Maybe this buck in question got in a fight and somehow got his jaw broken? Lots of possibilities for sure.

I was with my dad when he took this buck one evening before dark...there was a 6" deep tine hole the size of a toonie in the bucks throat that just missed the main artery......was -35 celcius outside that day.....I think thats why the old man looks like he crapped his pants in the picture [/URL]

Sweet! I checked my trailcams again yesterday and still do not have any bucks that have shed. The good news is that I have a lot better quality deer this year than I've seen in quite a few years!

Went out yesterday to see if I could manage to match up some of the antlers found the day before and did manage to match up one and found another set.

Finding these in WMU 510. May look like lots of snow buy probably only a foot deep, little bit more in the bush and where it's drifted. Funny thing is I have cams up in 10-12 different farm yards and fields and this place is the only one that some bucks have dropped.

The oats gave him a gum infection. Look at his swollen jaw. Sometimes it looks worse. A chunk of oats gets in between his tooth and gums and kills them.

Is that something that happens often, how come it doesnt happen to cattle? Or deer in the fall that are eating spilled or harvested grains?

No as odd as it sounds I am not. Look at his jaw. It is the only swollen part on his emaciated body. Look back at your after season baiting pictures. Over the years you will see a few deer that have got it. Some look worse then others.

I've seems half a dozen dogs need emergency surgery from grass in the gums. I've also seen swollen faced deer North of GP. Never put two and two together.

I headed out to Banff today and a few miles out of Banff I saw two bucks that have shed both sides. There wasn't any blood on the pedestals so I don't think it was super recent.

I just went and looked back at my pics from the past 15 years and I didn't see one other deer with a swollen jaw. Do they die from infection or starve to death? Also does it cause them to look like that deer? Tried google but couldn't find anything about this.
