I had one in a 308, it was a shooter alright but I sold it and here is why:

I was out hunting one day and my bolt was in closed battery with the safety on. As I was walking I came across a deer to harvest. I went to load a round into the chamber from the magazine when I noticed the bolt had came out of battery on its own and the action wide open, the safety was still on.

I made my harvest but my attention was soon back to the bolt and safety issue.

I came to realize that my bolt would open even when the safety was in the on position; whether there was a round in the chamber or not. The safety in the on position did not lock the bolt down.

I had no idea if this was common the 788.

Any thoughts out there; was this common or not?

PS: a buddy bought it said I was too fussy....He still uses it.

They all opened with the safety on and it didn't take much to have it happen, round chambered or not. My brother carries his with a big blue broccoli elastic around the bolt so it doesn't come open accidentally. Only real drawback I ever saw to the 788.
