Default Remington 788

Curious how many 788’s everyone has and likes. I’ve had one in a 22-250 for over 20 years and still love taking it out varmint hunting. It’s got the heavy barrel and stock making it a solid shooting platform. It still shoots cloverleafs under an inch at 100 yards and no idea how many rounds run through it. I sanded the beach wood stock years ago and got my wood burning kit out and customized with checkering and 22-250REM along the stock. Then finished it with tung oil to bring out the wood grain the original cherry stain was ugly imo now it looks pretty sharp. Seems like every other time I take it to the range someone offers to buy it from me one day I’ll hand it over to one of my boys.

One day

My father purchased one in 243rem new, around 40 years ago. They sold for around $200 with a Tasco scope. I sold his for $350, when he quit hunting big game. It was easily a sub moa rifle.

Lgs has one on the shelf .270 for almost 600$. I would love to has an older rem but I though the price was a bit steep.

I bought one when I was a kid in a 243 and loved it. I finally wore the barrel out and traded it... wish I would have just re-barreled it

Wow, you better go and buy that one, because the 788 never came in .270.......
Only short and medium cartridges.

When I bought mine (243 carbine) it had gathered over 15 deer and I've done over 2 dozen since with it.
Funny how my friends like to borrow it to finish their hunts...
I'd like to have my daughter use it but she fines it a little chunky.
I guess a model 7 is in the future.

I have a bit of an affinity towards these rifles, all mine are left hand action(right hand port) all were 6mm’s at the beginning of their lives.

That’s the .284Win, MPI stock, 3-9 compact Leupy, Gailliard barrel.

Thats the .260 Rem with a MCRS laminate stock(hybrid design), Jury #5 contour barrel.

This is a mostly stock 6mm, in a Ramline stock.

I've got one in 22-250. It is all original but I am considering re-stocking it. Dick, that MPI stock looks great.

I bought my 243 when i was about 14. Close to 50 years later, still have it. I put a Mcmillan thumbhole stock on it a couple of years ago.
The only knock on it is that the bolt is a little loose. The action is fine and it is a tack driver. It's not the kind of gun you pull out of the safe and ooh and ahh over but it is one of my favorites.

I told Chris I like this forend, this grip, and a specific cut of butt stock.
He had them all in his data base, he just computer morphed them together and voila, there it is.

Yes Lee, you did steer me to Chris at MCRS........

I don’t even know if MPI still makes that stock, I’ve had it for nearly 30 years now.
The paint job is compliments of member Bushrat.

Had a 222 all decked out ... lites out ... a regretful sale for a 222 anshultz that did not shoot any better... my only dislike was the heavy weigh forward of the rifle ... Smil'n Jack from Stavely bought it

Those are nice looking rifles Dick284 I really like the gray one. I almost had two different 6mm’s but they wouldn’t part with them even after I shot my biggest mulie with one of them.
This is my favourite target rifle

Awful rifles. You should probably let me take those so you dont have to store them.

Also have one in 22-250. Dipped in the Mothwing Winter Mimicry, APA camo pattern. Would like to have another one day in the wood finish.

My dad and I gave one in 308 to my younger brother on his 14th Birthday. That was 46 years ago. It has accounted for a lot of game in its time. It would always shoot clover leaf groups and still does. He refinished the stock too, rest is original. I found him a couple of spare mags for it last year for a good price. Wanted to get them while they are still around and reasonably priced.

He mostly uses a 300 WM in a Husquvarna that was my Dad's but he still takes the 788 out for deer in the bush occasionally. Will get passed on to a Grand Kid in a few years.

Great guns but I don't think I would pay 6 or 7 hundred for one.

I have had 3 of these rifles. All were accurate and easy to carry. I found the bolts were kind off sloppy, binding, and not very smooth, inserting mags was so so. Would equate then to a Savage Axis.

I have owned 4 of these over the years. A 7/08 carbine, a 6mm Rem, a 3030 Winch and a 308 Winch. Sadly, I only have the 308 today. All shot very well, I think due to their stiff barrels. They would be a winner if they were released again today in my opinion.

First rifle I ever owned was a 788 22-250 back in the late 70's. Loved that gun.

Still have two today. 22-250 (not the same one) & 222.

Sorry my bad. What was the predecessor to the 700? I thought it was the 788 must be mis-remembering.

I bought a 6mm lefty from a coworker 35ish years ago for about 200 bucks with scope and 2 magazines. I hated the 10 lb trigger on that rifle until I figured out how to make the trigger adjustable exactly like a model700. The thing is amazingly accurate and has accounted for a boxcar of game. Currently it is my go to coyote rig. It will stay with me as long as I can shoot.

Oh my, that is something. When you say two different stock styles/types, I believe the later built ones have a fatter for-end than the older ones, correct?
Is that what you mean by two styles?

Two lengths and one with a recessed mag well inletted into the stock and the other without. Early ones were plain walnut and I think latter ones birch.Numrich gun parts has some factory new stocks and mags.

I have owned two, my first hunting rifle in .308, and a .22-250. Both very nice shooting rifles for sure, though I don't miss them really. Replaced with a Model 700 B&C Edition in 7mm-08, and a Winchester M70 Featherweight in .22-250. Both have nicer actions and shoot better, though I do have a soft spot for the 788. My cousin still has one in triple duece, great coyote gun.
