Default Open water south of Calgary?

Just and update here I was out at PCR yesterday and about 3/4 of the lake is open with the Rest covered in very thin ice. Chucked a rig for walleye for about an hour with no action. I know she can be tricky in winter, anyone know what's it's like in spring generally? Wouldn't mind getting a good day in before the season ends!

I assume that grey dock at PCR comes out for winter. Any idea when they put it back in? We usually go sit out there and toss some rigs n minnows just to get a bit of action...

If it is you better hit it up tomorrow.

Lots of lakes with open water already but most of them will be closed this week for spawn. Its going to be a long frustrating wait this year waiting for all these lakes to open up to fishing.

I am heading to Chain lakes this weekend to do some camping, it will be cold! We will bring the rods and see. Sounds like 2 weeks ago the ice was 8" in some places still. But who knows after two weeks of warmer weather.

I'll post some pics of the conditions once I am back on Sunday.

Default Several still open

Don't get frustrated as there are a lot of lakes that fall into the open all year category. Trout ponds and several with Pike, Walleye and perch too. Just do some homework as they are out there. Myself and several others at work fish right through the closure every year.

You are absolutely right Gringo, there are plenty of water bodies open in Alberta - not to mention across Western Canada. It gives us opportunities to explore new water, and fish areas that you would typically pass on when you have familiar opportunities closer to home.

Not very many pike or walleye lakes open all year up here. I see there are a few down south and a few far north though.

I won't be frustrated at all as I have a ton of different trout lakes I plan on hitting while the pike/walleye lakes are closed. Non trout fishermen might be a little more frustrated watching open water for what will probably be near a month this year.
