Summer White fishing

Guys when fishing for whites in the summer (using wire worms) do you add any type of weights (split-shot) to your line?

Weight two feet above the wireworm. We fish with a fishfinder, and a real short rod, so that the weight can be seen on the screen. Position the ww about 1foot above the bottom (therefore the weight is 3 feet off the bottom). Often the whitefish come right off the bottom towards the ww. Slowly lift the ww up.
