Went deer hunting, more people and bears then deer. Not the start to the season I was hoping for.

No call outs(so far)
Built a hitch mounted clay bird thrower, so when we go goose hunting next week, my buddies boy can get some practice in.

Drive back from the lake today and took a walk in two of my favorite haunts.
Lots of sign and found some great spots to put my climber in!
Should be interesting next week !
Took payment for the sale of my M70 match rifle ? Still wondering if selling it was a smart move but I am picking up an RPA in 260 and a XR100 in 6MNBR so it isn't hurting TOO bad!!
Leo had to get an overload permit to transport the guns south - I neglected to tell him these are both F/0 target rifles they ain't "Hunting weight "rifles for sure!!

Shot a trap tournament on Saturday.
Those birds are guaranteed to be there.
Not great eating though...

Spent the weekend riding around the bush and hiking with my boys, looking for grouse. Was fairly quiet, although we did spot deer from time to time. Same as last weekend.

We decided to do one last tour last night before heading home, and around 3:30, suddenly we were seeing grouse. Was really interesting, almost like flipping a switch.

What this thread needs is some photos and keep it going.

My weekend was spent celebrating birthdays, a little target practice, some trail riding with the Jeep and some quality time in the deer blind with my little buddy.

Already making plans for next weekend

Good elk season.

Me Thursday night, 150 yards with an HS Precision 300 WSM

Called this nice fellow in for my son Sunday morning. He used a Tikka 658 in 338 WM st about 225 yards.

My nephew got this bull Monday evening. Told him where to set up, and just cow call. Taken with my HS Precision at 150 yards. All 3 taken in the same field within 100 yards of each other.

My wife, BIL and sis were out for the last week at our favorite elk'in area. Sis had her cow draw this year, the guys had general elk and wt tags.
First night out BIL is texting he has 2 does 35 yds! we are replying, save the does, forcus on the elk. We don't have to drive 6 hours for a deer.
Next morning i see a cow and a calf cross my line. Nobody else saw a thing. Nothing turned up on the night stand either. The next morning, at the same time the cow and calf turn up again. That was the last elk we saw all week, but did we see moose! I saw my largest bull ever, even at a distance it was the largest animal i had ever seen. His junk was wider than the trail, well over 50". My BIL saw him a couple days later, only a few yards behind his stand. Got some good pics and a vid of him.
Wifely and i had a relaxing evening stand by a beaver dam. Had the pleasure of watching curious beavers swim around and a very light colored coyote take an interest in us as well. We all had a chance to watch a young bull moose chase a cow around near camp.
By far the neatest thing I saw was a Lynx. It came out one morning just a few yards away from my spot and casually walked up the trail. First one I have ever seen in the wild.

I had another great weekend with a couple exceptions, one being tearing the sidewall out of my Jeep tire, a $400 touch.

My youngest son made a new distance record with his bow.

I helped a friend of mine get his first bull moose with a bow.

Then once we got it back to my cabin my oldest boy picked it up with the ol’ John deer and the youngest supervised to make sure we did a good job skinning it.

Then we had a few drinks and told stories around the campfire.

All in all it was another great weekend in the woods with my family and friends.

5 days elk hunting. 28 degrees C for 2 of them. Real nice.

Could have plastered a nice bull squirrel.

Default Ruffed Grouse North of Slave Lake

We spent the weekend hunting grouse about an hour north of slave lake. We thought numbers might be down with the wet spring. They were. We still managed a few birds though. One interesting find was that we shot three very small ruffed grouse. The tail feathers were only a few inches long. These looked like birds you might happen across in July or August. We were thinking these birds might have been from a second clutch if the first checks were lost from the wet/cold. Having shot hundreds of birds in this area, these were the first we've seen like this.

Shot a nice and healthy, spiker bull moose. Broke in the new stove in the wall tent and enjoyed a few celebratory brews by the fire. Life is good!

Got my first grouse in years last Saturday.

Now, to be clear, since the kids have been able to hunt, I've been letting them carry my grouse guns and have first crack. This time around, they "let" the old man have a turn again.

Roads were dry, and we were able to actually drive a loop with the truck that I haven't ever attempted in past years; We have walked many sections of the trail beyond where the truck could go no further.

There was one trail that I rediscovered - I recall being able to take my old F150 down it fifteen years ago. Now only OHVs can get past the last mud hole to get there. Of course, that meant that we are seeing a lot more animals in that area.

To finish off the day, my oldest son shot his first deer, and that was on the trail I mentioned above! So proud of the guy. Both boys worked hard to get it back to the truck before nightfall (thankfully they didn't leave it all up to me!) As the sun set, a nearby pack of wolves sang a requiem for the buck.

I hadn't brought any hauling gear (and I had sold my game cart) so it was a bit of a workout! Got to try out my Jim Shockey Havalon Titan (a gift from my sister) for the first time.

Was great for the boys to see what kind of work goes into bringing a deer home, cutting/trimming/wrapping etc. They worked hard, and I'm really proud of them! Backstrap hit the pellet grill on Sunday evening, and man, does that taste good!

All in all a perfect day - We had gorgeous weather. We saw a golden eagle, fisher and a trophy skunk. Met a couple of gents on quads and chatted a bit (I think I talked too much, I could see their eyes glaze over just before they fired up the quads and rode off... Those of you who have met me know what I'm talking about!)

Was a fulfilling outing, aside from the grouse and deer we came home with. And to share it with my boys, to see their excitement and love for the outdoors, well, that made my weekend.
