How much does this Coyote Weigh?
I caught this bad boy yesterday. I checked my snares and found another coyote in a snare partially eaten by another coyote (a first for me). I followed the tracks and found this guy in another snare. I'm going to weigh him before I put him up tomorrow night. Nothing real accurate, just a bathroom scale, but it does measure pounds to the decimal point (ie. 25.9 lbs). Anyone want to take a stab at the weight of this cannibal coyote? Beer can for perspective.
PS. Hopefully he's going to be more prime than the red fox on the right.....lol.

The teeth don't look wore down, must not be very old. When you tell us how much he weighs how about how long on stretcher nose to base of tail.
Thanks Jim

Nice catch, that one that would cause a lot of problems for the other critters.

He weighed in at 40 lbs pretty much on the dot. Last year the biggest that I weighed was 41 lbs so it's a pretty respectable size. I figured him for a little better than that by the looks of him but I guess that he's just well furred.

They look kinda dark. Almost what the old fur buyers would call a brush wolf. Maybe just wet. Nice Dawgs tho. I wish I was home when I see pics like that. Good job. I would have said 45 with a nice thick chest like that. A male?

Yes, a male. They are pretty much all dark around here. I had a look at what I sent to auction last year and about 5% were GC, 10% MED, and the rest were all DBR, DBR-DK and DK. If I catch a Pale one it’s probably lost.

That's a beast of a coyote. You have to wonder if the coyote/wolf hybrids from east have made it to Alberta yet.

No, not around here. Those Algonquin wolves are a species in Canada now but still considered just a coy wolf hybrid in the US. Their range is east of the Manitoba border but mainly around the Algonquin Park area, my old stomping grounds. You can’t shoot or trap coyotes in numerous Counties around the park because of them. Quite the controversy in that area but I find the history of the Eastern wolf breeding with coyotes pretty interesting stuff.
I caught a coyote today that must have been a coyote/chihuahua pup mix. Almost tempted to do another “guess the weight” picture if it wasn’t so pathetic. 10 pounds......maybe?

Well, curiosity got the better of me. The other night I shot a big old female coyote and by the time I got her dragged out of the valley some 300 yards I would have sworn she weighed 100 lbs.
Anyway, I got out the beam scale and weighed the carcass - 32 lbs all skinned out. I fleshed at least 4 lbs of fat from the hide - I think she must have been close to 40 lbs live weight. On the stretcher board she measures 63" from nose to end of tail hairs and 13" wide at the bottom.
I took one dog that I am sure was bigger than her, but the tape measure shows 63 and 13 for him as well.

Nice catch. You should only be 9" at the base of the pelt if you are sending them to auction though.

I tried narrower at the base and they wouldn't stretch out in length to take the slack out of the pelt.
