Default 22LR Sport

Did Cooey make a model called Sport?
Nothing else on the barrel other than 22LR.
Any idea when they were made? Is this rifle prohibited if the barrel is under 18”?
Asking for a friend.

Firstly welcome to the forum.

Did it come from the factory with a 18” barrel and it’s overall length is still over 26” then it is not a prohibited firearm.

Try reading the definitions of prohibited firearm here:

https://laws-lois.justice.gc.ca/eng/...ection-84.html

And if you retained anything from your CFSC course you should have been able to let your friend in on the definitions.

As for the model, it’s sort of hard to determine much from a name without some pictures…….

Yes they did. It was classed as a boys rifle. As long as overall length is longer than 26" your not prohib unless the barrel was cut/ modified to under 18.5". If it is factory built under 18" your good if it was cut down its no good. Total length needs to be 26" or greater in any regard or its prohib...hope this helps

It came from the factory at under 18”. Also it is an estate item from grandfather who pioneered on the prairies from 1911. It looks like a Cooey, possibly Eatons or Sears had them in their catalogs. Just wondering status of this rifle.

Obsessed 1 we’re talking barrel length when you say from factory under 18”, then when you say 26” do you mean gun length including stock. Sorry for all the questions, but I’m not a gun person.

Yes your correct. As dick says all the info is in the link he provided right from the governments mouth....just so you dont take my word as gospel....

Basic Cliff notes are

Restricted gun is any factory gun under 26" overall length
Prohibited gun is any modified barrel under 18.5" or any modified rifle under 26" overall length
Non restricted is any factory made gun with overall length being 26" or longer or any modified barrel 18.5" or longer or any factory made barrelnof any length as long as overall length is 26" or longer.....

Please read the link dick provided to confirm.. this is a legal issue that can have legal consequences....you dont want to just trust some guy on the internet in such matters...

Thanks for all the patience. Non being in the subject area, I’m a little slow on the uptake. Still trying though.
The rifle has an unmodified under 18” barrel with an overall length of gun over 26”. I guess this would make it non restricted.
Correct me if I have not interpreted this correctly.
Further to this where can I find out the approximate year this “Sport 22 long range” was made? I’m assuming it is a Cooey because of the time era( 1920’s and on) and it was Canadian. Eatons and Sears probably sold these rifles.
Lastly I joined this forum to get opinions from people who are more into guns(etc), than I am. For this, thank you.
Sometimes reading legalese language is not clear until your well versed in the subject area.
Thanks again.

Crosman177,
Thanks for the info. Very similar resemblance, the dimensions are off a bit.
The only stamped info was Sport 22 Long Rifle. I’ll pass this along.
Thanks for your reply.

Your short barrel cooey sport seems to have been made from 1926 through to the mid 30s from what i can find online. There will be a serial # somewhere on the receiver that can be tracked to find a closer date of manufacture.

Tried to find a serial number, but without taking it all apart, I don’t seem to find one. Maybe a better pair of glasses.
Thanks for everyone’s help, glad I came to the forum.
Take care.

Most, if not all Cooeys before the 1968 mandatory rule, do not have serial numbers. Just the way it was.
