Elk are eating my hay
Anyone have some good ideas on how to keep the elk out of my hay. I know fencing it off is the best but not happening right now due to cost. I have heard through the grapevine of someone who shot an elk at his stack and left it and the elk just walk over it to get at the hay. I have chased them off and shot over their heads but they keep coming, its just getting worse.

Have you tried scarecrows or scare cannons? Lots of human scent round?

I will try f&w haddent thought of that, scarecrow doubtful i prop 16' 2x4's around the stack and they just knock them over to get at my hay, by the way this is prime thoroughbred grass hay i'm using for spring training the racehorses, am training 14 and the elk are eating it as fast as the horses.
Wolfscent sounds good, where would i get some? I like the idea of wolf scent but am thinking if the horses got a whiff of that would they still eat the hay?

I have used plastic snow fencing to keep deer away. Pbly work on Elk as well.
Peg it flat on the ground all around your bales. They hate getting their hoofs caught up in it. You may have to go two deep for Elk but worth a try.

Get a dog. If you already have one that sleeps on the couch, get a new one.

Nothing works,I am feeding elk myself. They are hungry and aggressively work their way into the livestock.

Maybe just put minerals and salt block out for your "cows" and you might end up with a good hunting season

If F&W can not help you send me a PM and I will tell you what worked for me. I have had 2 FN people hunting on my place since Jan and still have elk just not in my hay.

Get a few 8' high banners made with our premier's smiling face on it. That ought to keep them away.

F&W will do sweet tweet. I had a problem with elk a few years ago, the guy I talked to offered a propane cannon but said it would only work for a day or two and they would get used to it. They offered up some 8' wire to build a bale yard but that didn't help at the time and it cost a ton of money to put it up and get gates. All they would cover was the wire, ever price out 10' posts? On top of it all they denied compensation for the feed cause it was mostly the silage bales that they were going in to and they don't cover silage. I fed about 22 head that winter good thing I had extra feed. Oh yeah, if I declined the offer of the wire I would be exempt from any future claims for wildlife damage on feed. Yeah, good deal. If it ever happens again I will call some FN to come take care of the problem for me.

Radio is good idea, I've heard of them smashing it after a few days. I'd try one though and maybe some kind of strobe flashy safety light maybe a couple of them. Ad some electric fence and should be good.
I like having them around, mind ya all I've fed is a handful of deer every once in a while.

Amazing how greedy they get, i,ve been pretty good to them for a few years now. Now they think they own the place, had a bull after me this fall, was interesting. Will try snow fence and radio, although they are tearing up the tarps and rip the game cams off the trees.
