38/357 is cheaper for plinking and small game hunting
44 mag is by far a better choice for deer and pig than 357

Good call.

I may skip out on the 35 Remington and buy two Rossi’s one in 44 magnum with a 16” barrel and one in 44-40 with a 20” barrel.

Default Lever action

I have a Savage 250-3000 and a Henry 357/38 Big Boy Steel carbine. Both are good guns but I only shoot the Henry - mainly targets and plinking. I think the Henry would be ok for deer under at 75 yards. Also have a Winchester 94 in 30-30 cal from the early years but like the Savage it too is more of a keepsake. I do enjoy shooting the Henry and I like the 357 cal.

Another vote for the BLRs. 30-06 and 270 WSM were my choices.

I wouldn’t buy both. I’d pool the money, buy the 44 mag and spend more on ammo. Buy bulk and save.
Also, cabelas has the henry big boy in 44 mag on sale. Save $220

Good call on the Henry big boy. I never did want one of them fancy guns because I wouldn’t want to use it for anything. But plinking and small game hunting or varmints in the yard would be pretty wicked with the old west style gun.

Couple pm from members about a 35 rem. so see what happens first. A 35 rem or 44 mag.

My vote is .44mag in anything from a Winchester to a Henry.

Unless you can find a lever in 303 go 30/30. Unless your going after big bruins. Those 2 have killed a ton of game for a long time.

A 30/30 with leverrevolution flex tip type bullets would give a flatter trajectory

Default 44 mag

I really like my 44 mag as my `protection` saddle gun, 10 in the tube, large loop for working with gloves on, glow site and that 44 mag when you reload it for a rifle is very impressive.

For ultimate flexibility in loading you can find a few Rossi’s in .454 casull. Light plinking loads in 45 colt are fun and full bore hand loads would be very effective on game.

Yeah truthfully I’d never own a browning. Never have been a fan of the company. I think for what they are is just over priced, paying extra for the logo.

That’s a very nice rifle. Did you do the checkering?

After the trade fell through, and a couple other deals. I went to a local gun shop in my neck of the woods I never knew about and bought a brand new Rossi M92 16” carbine in 44 rem mag. He has quite a few levers including Winchester trappers in 30-30 and such. Some used but mostly new.

I’ll update some more if I get him to order me a 35 Rem lever.

I knew someone who had a scoped .22-250 lever action. It was used for killing varmints.

Had a Win Legacy 45 Long Colt.
Traded it off, just not practical for me.
I could actually see the cast factory loads flying at 800 FPS.
I did load some of my own jacketed 200’s at 1400 FPS.

Default Marlin

If I were you I would go with an Vintage Antique Marlin 1889,’91, etc in 44-40, Octagon barrel, nothing like a 130 year old rifle! And once youve handled a Marlin of that erra, you’ll likely never want a Winchester again! And for $1000 youd have a heritage piece that crossed the prairies when Buffalo roamed?

That’s a great idea to consider, I don’t plan on buying a Winchester though. I’m not a fan of the 30-30 caliber, I’d like a marlin in 35 rem. though. Old or new, that 44-40 would be a nice addition to me lever collection. Thanks for the idea

My uncle had a scoped .308 lever in savage or browning (can’t remember) that he killed a lot of game with.

I like the .35 rem too. Mines a very clean 1968 from the original New Haven marlin factory. Old world craftsmanship at its best.

Money no object - .500 S&W from Big Horn Armory.

After that maybe a nice Winchester Model 88 in .284.

Too close to the 30-30. The Op don’t like 30/30

I’ve had good luck with the 38-55. Cast boolits work well and cheap if you have a source of wheel weights.

I tried last spring when I moved out of Canada. Nobody wanted it then and now I’m 15,000 km away so no I can’t sell it to you. It can keep the rest of my rifles company until I go back to the cold country to use them.

Hands down the best lever action in my safe is the .338 marlin express. If I could only own one lever that’s what it would be. A legitimate 400 yard rifle that feels like a real lever gun. Mine will never go anywhere.

That said, it’s not only an open sight, short range proposition so not what your OP was asking about.
