Are these an actual breed?
Dug up an old garage sale pic that I have had over 20 years.
Wife asked me what breed of dog was/is depicted.
Not sure if a real breed or a artists representation of what he thinks a hunting dog should look like.
What say you?

Springer spaniels have docked tails.
Looks like an English Setter.

Back ones tail and frame say English setter. Front dog says dogs are not the artists forte.

Reminds me of the pics on old calendars by Currier and Ives. I think what is depicted is are field setters.

looks japanese to me
When browning moved the engraving from Leige Belgium to Japan in 1973 one of the things we noticed that the pheasants looked ok but the dogs and habitat looked a bit more different than we were used to . Japanese engravers are probably familiar with pheasants but the hunting dogs (like setters) had serious underbites with short jaws and the ear sets were wrong. Probably had never seen a setter. It was also common for their pointers to look like griffons or greyhounds and their squirrels to look like weasels.

What a great garage sale find! The engraving technique is called 'Aquatint', because the complicated process produces a print that looks similar to a watercolour. Many were then hand coloured with water paints. The master engraver that produced Audubon's famous illustrations in 'Birds of America' used the aquatint technique. Probably the best sporting dog artist using this technique was R. Ward Binks 1880 - 1950, who did fantastic dog portraits for royalty & the rich & famous around the world. Google Images has lots of his work.
The artist and publishing house should be in tiny letters in the bottom right border of your engraving. Probably done in England.

Here's an Aquatint, coloured Binks image that I was given, many years ago. (this image pulled off the net - mine's difficult to photograph behind the antique frame's glass) Same weird treatment of foliage as in your image.
