Default Under ice beaver runs

When looking for under ice beaver runs, how far away from the base of the hut do you start looking?

Hi Mark
The runs basically start at the base of the house, so depending on the depth of water at the house will determine where the run is. Find where the air bubbles are on leaving the house, cut your hole, and with a long pole, feel for the bottom and you will find the exit.Hope this helps... Merry Christmas to you, Mark..

Thanks Doug. I'm finding it difficult with all the snow and 14 inches of ice on the pond

Hey mark I trapped around a food pile this year ( bank beavs). I shoved a lot of snow to get to ice then I broomed the ice with a corn then a plastic broom head to get all the snow. Keep doing it until you see a lot of fine bubbles. Then bingo.

Just like mentioned above but also you might be able to hear the difference in ice thickness over a run if you tap the ice with your ice chisel. Be careful close to the house as ice can be thin over runs too.
Alot of times the main run will be pretty direct to the feed pile.

x2 on ice thickness had a partner many years ago take a short cut to one of our sets and went for a polar bear swim. Always take the same path into your set, it makes the ice thicker and is safer.

A good house with loads of beaver your Ice chisel should go through the ice in one or two thrusts. Keep a rope loop on your chisel and around your wrist so you don't loose your chisel. You can some times see an indent in the house were the run is between the house and the feed pad. Curved dead willow will confirm the run or a very hard bottom the beaver like to run along the bottom of the pond.
