Default 2 1/2 shot shells

Anyone know for sure a shop around Edmonton where I can buy 2 1/2 in shotshells? The kid at Cabelas never heard of them!

He likely means 12 gauge 2.5" or 65mm (i.e. 2-9/16").

I just started to reload for my '58 Belgian SXS. The typical thing with 2.5" is to trim 2.75" shells & roll crimp. Roll crimping lets you use 2.75" loads as the difference in length is the fold crimp & modern wads.

You can order 2.5" shot shells online from Wolverine or Tradex.

Two places for reloading supplies I've used is Western Metals & Bilozir Fine Guns.

Sorry, this is wrong. Lots of older 12 gauge shotguns are chambered for 65 mm.

2/34 3 or 3/12 Is the only ones I am familiar with for the 12 gauge .410 has 2/12 Phil.

I don’t have the ability to reload. My dad will make some up for me this summer.
I’m just hoping to get out this weekend with the “new” sxs and was hoping I could find some shells within the city.
Thanks for the links, I’ll probably order

Can they be shorter?

I saw some 1-3/4" Aguila minishells at Phoenix indoor range.
I would call first, that was a couple months ago.

A lot of the old 870's way back when use to have the barrels stamped For 2 3/4 inch shells or shorter. And they sold for about 58 bucks at Eatons

I’ve been shooting 2 1/2” shells in most gauges for many years , they are lots of fun!
Leo even gave me some factory loaded 2 1/2” 12 gauge Ammo last year!

If you can find 2 1/2" they will be a bit more expensive, $15-$19 a box at Prophet River who has a real good selection of RST ammo, than the regular 2.75, but if you can load them there is no real difference in cost. If you end up having to shoot factory ammo all the time I would get the forcing cones lengthened, as long as it isn't a collector piece. Makes getting ammo a whole bunch easier and cheaper since you can get light target loads for about $6 a box versus $15.

I have lengthened the forcing cones on a frw shotguns over the years with no negative results, but I shoot only low pressure smokeless or black powder put ig my vintage guns.
They do kill everything that flies very well however , within their limitations .
Let’s face it, shotguns and loads of days gone by are NOT 60 yard killers !
They will however work fine I’ve er decoyed waterfowl pointed upland birds - both wild and released .

Default build your own

You can convert any 2 3/4" shell into a 2 1/2" shell by trimming the top off with a sharp box knife, insert an over shot plastic card and give the top a slight bevel to hold the over shot card in place. works great..
Also you can purchase a Lee Load-all Modify it, and precut 2 3/4" hulls to 2 1/2" and reload them. I use both methods and I'm never short of 2 1/2" shells. I have never purchase any 2 1/2" tailor mades either.

Thanks for the replies guys. Reloading is in my future for sure just not now. I have considered lengthening the cones but seen some bulges on the internet that have me worried. The barrels do tapper quite a bit, so not sure if it’s possible.
The gun is a 1937 Cogswell-Harrison Avant- Tout. 90% condition

Default phoenix and P&D in edmonton

to the op...I have seen aguila minis at both. may have even seen them in cdn tire in Leduc.

Keep in mind, you typically need the tacsol adapter to cycle them correctly.
have fun!

Altering nice Cogswell and Harrison barrels would seriously harm it's value, making it "out of proof".
You are right to be concerned about the safety of altering light British game gun barrels.
RST or Gamebore 2 1/2 inch cartridges from Kent are the way to go, unless you reload.

I won’t be altering it. 2 1/2 are still widely used and preferred in some cases in England. I will most definitely spend the extra and buy the shells. Here’s some pics. The guns in excellent shape for its age. The only problem is wood shrinkage at the fore arm.
