Default 17hmr suggestions

Looking at getting a new HMR. Sold my T-bolt. Looking for some reviews. Have had marlin, savages, and browning. Thinking of getting a CZ. Any others I should consider? Liked to browning, but was too lightweight, like a gun that would feel more like full-size centerfire.
Thanks

Love CZ rifles. Have a 452 varmint in that chambering, plus several others in centre fire and rimfire. Be fore-warned: once you get your first one, you will be hit with a strong urge to buy others. Old school blued steel and wood. Even a 22 feels like a real rifle. They shoot too!

I have had Marlin, Savage, CZ, Browning T-Bolt and Anschutz. The Savage is every bit as accurate as any other gun, just doesn't have the refined fit and finish. Between the various guns I have put over 30,000 rounds on the Savage, 20,000 on the Marlin, 30,000 on the first CZ and about 20,000 on the current one. The Anschutz has about 3000 on it so far. None of them showed any signs of being worn out, group size was as good as when new.

Group size is limited by the lack of match ammo for 17 HMR, no one makes any, unlike 22 RF. Pretty much all the barrels of all the makers are quite capable of extracting max accuracy out of the available ammo, except the two T-Bolts. Neither of them would shoot under an inch, one of them wouldn't do 2", with any ammo. I sold both with less than 1000 rounds on each. If you can hack the yardage it is really hard to beat an Anschutz, followed by the CZ and both come left handed. They won't shoot much better than a Savage but they look a whole bunch better doing it.

I would look at Tikka and CZ, I am not fond of the stamped parts used by Savage.

I had a CZ 455 Varmint in .17HMR. Easily a half MOA factory rifle. I'm kind of kicking myself for selling it.

Just a suggestion.

I bought a CZ 455 American last summer from a forum member. Love the gun! Trigger had a fair amount of creep in it, but I bought the YoDave trigger kit and fixed it right up. Now I have a real bad itch to buy a 22 mag and a 22LR to go with it. People are correct when they say one CZ is never enough.

Oh, and at 100 yards the rifle shoots better than I can. Can usually cover a 5 shot group with a loonie. Thats using 20gr CCi Gamepoint ammunition.

Own a couple of CZ's. You will want to rework the trigger and the 11mm rails are a bit of a pain but other than that good rifles.

Of my hmr's the Savage heavy barrel is by far the most accurate and has the best trigger but Savage mags are a pain in the arse.

If you go CZ don't bother with the metal mags. Polymer versions are just fine.

I picked up the new Tikka T1X a few months ago and it is hands down the most accurate rimfire I have ever owned, and I’ve owned most makes. They are starting to slowly show up at the gun stores. I found mine at Canadian tire for $700 but you can order online out of Quebec for $650..

Cz 455 in 17HMR 3-9x40 Leupold
100yd groups

These are pretty typical groups from the gun when I first got it. 3 1/2 pound trigger with a healthy dose of creep. Gun had a long term average of about a 1.4 inch. These 4 groups range from 0.95 to 1.55 inches for a 1.28 inch average. I shot about 200 rounds through the gun like this and I would have to say that I was displeased with the accuracy. All groups are 5 shots.

Installed a new spring and a shim. Trigger breaks at about 1 3/4 pounds. Creep is very slight. The gun now averages just over an inch. If I ever get around to doing my part there's no doubt the groups would shrink even more. Bottom right group has 8 shots, the rest are 5 shots. ( Some of the holes are tough to see in the pictures) Groups in the picture range from 0.63 to 1.22 inch with a 0.95 inch average.

CZ's can give good accuracy. A spring and a shim can do a lot to help improve it.

I have never seen a CZ that wouldn't do under moa at 100m. How many different loads did you try?

I have a CZ 452 LH in 17 HMR and a savage GL 93R17. The savage shoots just as good as the CZ but the bolt sometimes doesn’t pick up shells and the bolt feels as though it was made in a grade 7 art class.

I have a heavy barrel savage and it shoots very well.

it is the heavy stock too with very nice wood and it feels really good when shooting it.

Now that you can get proper bullets for a 22 win mag I would go with that instead now....

Like all rimfires...it's the combination of the gun AND the ammo it likes that drives how good the accuracy will be. And the trigger of course. My 452 Varmint in 17HMR printed the best rimfire group I've ever spit out in 40 years of shooting. I was using 20gr. HPs, Hornady brand, and all 5 rounds printed about a 3/8" group @ 100 yards. I was convinced I wanted to use the 17gr. Ballistic tips...the exact same gun could barely keep those in the 1" ring. Seldom did in fact.

When I got back into HMRs, I wanted a CZ badly...but for gophers out there, decided I should prioritize the ammo type I want to use. Took a small risk on an older Marlin 917, and it shot that ammo under 3/4" all day. Replaced the trigger with a Rifle Basix and the gun will shoot +/- 1/2" on a calm day if I haven't had too much coffee. It's proven to be a stellar gopher gun and does that job well. I like it, but love the CZs.

Not going to assume your HMR choice is gopher-centric like mine was, but if it is...my opinion is that for the cost of HMR ammo over the (expected) life of the gun while you have it...there is serious merit in buying a top-shelf 22 instead. Ammo choices are staggering in 22LR, and I can say with some degree of authority~it's a great choice for gophers. I constantly meet guys who base their opinion of the caliber on their experience with the crappiest gun/ammo types out there. lol Get behind a nice Anschutz and some good ammo...the bullets go where they should. My primary gopher rifle is a CZ 452 Varmint in 22LR, with a tuned trigger. I have an Anschutz 64 MPR "Tactical Trainer" being groomed for the job as we speak.

Default 17hmr suggestions

My best hmr was my first, when hmr first came out. Should never have sold it. Was a plane Jane marlin heavy barrel, I could shoot the tacks holding target up ( at 100yds ).

I ordered a Tikka from cabelas. Now deciding on glass. Had vortex diamondback tactical on last one, may do it again.
